The National Audubon Society is offering a seasonal internship for a Forest Conservation Intern based at the Sharon Audubon Center in Connecticut. This role supports hands-on conservation efforts for bird species during and after nesting season. Ideal for students or early-career professionals interested in field biology and habitat restoration.

Description

The Forest Conservation Intern will assist in bird conservation projects, habitat management, and invasive species control at Sharon Audubon Center. The intern will support banding activities, behavioral observation, and species monitoring for kestrels and purple martins. The position includes opportunities to gain experience in bird surveys, environmental research, and collaborative planning within a team of conservation professionals. Independent research is encouraged but optional.

Responsibilities
• Monitor and maintain American Kestrel nest boxes
• Assist with bird banding and tagging of kestrels and purple martins
• Document purple martin behavior through observation and photography
• Support data collection for the Bird Genoscape Project
• Conduct breeding bird surveys after training
• Help implement non-chemical invasive plant control
• Study training materials and conservation projects from CT/NY and Audubon hemispheric programs
• Participate in team planning sessions and field discussions
• Assist with CT DEEP bird study activities

Minimum Requirements
• College coursework or equivalent experience in conservation, biology, forestry, or related field
• Strong interest in birds, field research, and natural resources
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
• Physically capable of prolonged outdoor work in varied conditions
• Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
• Background check required

Preferred Qualifications
• Skill in bird and/or plant identification
• Experience with cameras, hand tools, or wild bird handling
• Photography skills
• Prior experience in land management

Additional Notes
• Seasonal position with flexible start and end dates (May 28 – August 10)
• Schedule is 4–5 days/week, Monday through Friday
• Reports to Sharon Audubon Center Director and works under full-time staff supervision
