Job Description

FM is offering a Climate Risk & Resilience Internship in Norwood, MA, for 3 to 6 months. Interns will work on tornado research, data cleaning, and GIS database creation under senior supervision. Candidates should be undergraduates with strong analytical and GIS skills, and experience in programming. The role is in-office, with temporary relocation support provided. Salary ranges from $28 to $33 an hour.

The Climate Risk & Resilience Team at FM is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual for an internship in Norwood, MA. The intern will work under the supervision of senior staff and will have the opportunity to tackle real-world science and engineering challenges in the insurance industry. The project involves:
• Cleaning past tornado loss data
• Linking these losses to known tornadoes and tornado outbreak events
• Collecting available engineering information related to the losses
• Creating a searchable GIS database

The internship is planned to last 3 to 6 months. By the end of the internship, the intern will gain experience in
• Tornado research
• Insurance losses
• Wind engineering

We are looking for undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to expand their research experience beyond academia. Ideal candidates will have:
• Attention to detail
• Strong analytical skills
• GIS skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GDAL)
• Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, and FORTRAN
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfort with writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows
• Familiarity with both Microsoft Windows and Linux environments

This is an in-office role based in Norwood, MA. Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
