Job Description

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is seeking a Fisheries Biologist in Alaska to manage fishery habitats and collaborate with various agencies. Responsibilities include assessing aquatic habitats, analyzing data for fishery management, and preparing environmental reports. Applicants must have a degree in biological sciences and relevant experience. This position requires U.S. citizenship and may involve a background check. The job is full-time with a salary range of $50K–$80K annually.

The incumbent serves as a fishery biologist responsible for managing fishery habitats and coordinating with other resources.

Duties
• Responsibilities listed at the minimum full performance level, GS-09
• Classify habitat and assess stream conditions of fisheries
• Gather and compile aquatic habitat and species data using various sampling equipment to identify fish habitat needs
• Contribute biological input to fish habitat management programs to aid in developing fishery management plans
• Analyze data to recommend solutions for issues involving fishery resources and identify needs for habitat improvement projects
• Map key fish habitats to evaluate suitability and identify enhancement or restoration needs
• Collaborate with State, Tribal, and Federal agencies on aquatic species and habitat management
• Prepare environmental analysis reports and evaluate threatened, endangered, and sensitive species for review by senior biologists
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams to discuss environmental issues at district or forest levels

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

GS-0482: Degree in biological sciences with at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects and 12 in animal sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specialized Experience for GS-07: One year of experience at GS-5 level or equivalent, or graduate education, or a combination thereof. Examples include field data collection, report preparation, collaborative resource management, and gear maintenance.

Specialized Experience for GS-09: One year of experience at GS-07 level or equivalent, or graduate degree, or a combination. Examples include habitat classification, development of sampling plans, and inter-organizational collaboration.
