Job Description
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking a Fish & Wildlife Technician 1 in Stony Brook, NY. The role involves collecting and analyzing acoustic data on Myotid bats, interpreting aerial images, maintaining recording equipment, and assisting with various wildlife programs. The position requires fieldwork, travel, and may involve long hours. This is a seasonal, hourly role ending around 10/15/25, with specific duties discussed during the interview.
The technician in this position would be collecting and analyzing acoustic data to determine the summer distribution of Myotid bats on Long Island. Job duties would include interpreting aerial images to identify appropriate survey locations, setup and maintenance of sound recording equipment, data management and analysis of recorded bat calls, assisting with mist netting and radiotracking of Myotid bat species.
The Technician in this position would also assist with other regional wildlife programs including the monitoring and management of endangered species; non-game species; game species; and nuisance wildlife. The person in the position may also assist in posting boundaries on state managed lands, performing land management activities including trail maintenance, grassland management and facility maintenance.
Position involves travel from the office to field sites and may require long days and frequent early morning and evening hours.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 10/15/25. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
