Job Description
The State of Alaska is hiring a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 as a crew leader for the Nome Weir from June to September. Responsibilities include camp setup, weir maintenance, salmon counting, and biological sample collection. The position is remote, located 10 miles from Nome, requiring flexibility in working hours. Candidates must be Alaska residents and have experience in remote field work, operating boats, and supervising staff.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Nome!
What you will be doing:
This position will be as a crew leader at the Nome River weir field camp from approximately June 1 through September 30 each year. Duties include: camp setup, weir installation, camp maintenance, weir maintenance, counting salmon by species, collecting biological samples, weir removal, and camp removal at the end of the season. Biological information collected will include length, sex, and scales samples for aging from a variety of salmon species. Information and samples collected will be tabulated daily. It is imperative that the incumbent be organized, complete forms neatly and concisely, and collect biological samples according to ADF&G protocols to ensure accuracy of the data collected and to ease data entry post season.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a remote, yet accessible, location on the Nome River conducting salmon enumeration with a fixed picket weir. This position includes overtime, off time, private sleeping quarters, can accommodate most school schedules, and may offer opportunities for extended seasonal employment with other Norton Sound salmon or crab projects.
The working environment you can expect:
This is a remote field position located approximately 10 miles from Nome on the Nome River and has limited amenities. After weir installation, hours worked will generally be 7.5 hours; however, the incumbent’s hours may vary to coincide with fish migration patterns and the incumbent must be flexible in response to fish passage. This position works 7 days/week during the field season while in camp. Housing in the field is composed of wall tents with each individual having their own sleeping tent. Additionally, there is a shared cook tent with a stove/oven and refrigerator. Food will be provided while in camp. Food and supplies will either be dropped off at the weir site or the incumbent may Travel to Nome to shop.
• May require travel is small aircraft, fixed wing or rotary;
• Requires travel by boat is riverine environments;
• Requires living/working is remote conditions.
Who we are looking for:
• Experience living and working in remote field camps for extended periods;
• Experience operating outboard motorboats;
• Experience maintaining and operating weirs (fixed picket or resistance board);
• Experience collection biological samples and identifying salmon;
• Experience overseeing or acting as the lead worker for at least one other technician; and
• Good communication skills and ability to work independently while maintaining a team environment.

Special Note:
• This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
• First Aid/CPR Certification required. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
