Job Description

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is hiring a Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 in Herkimer, NY. Responsibilities include wildlife handling, data collection, and habitat management. Candidates must work in various weather conditions and rough terrain. A minimum of 30 college credits in relevant fields is required, along with good communication and organizational skills. This is a seasonal, part-time position with a pay rate of $19/hour.

Duties Description

Assist with all aspects of Bureau of Wildlife work, primarily in the southern part of

Region 6, which may include, but is not limited to: handling and surveying wildlife, big game harvest data collection, nuisance wildlife response including nuisance bear response and deer damage permit inspections, Chronic Wasting Disease monitoring, waterfowl banding, wildlife health monitoring, upland game bird work, outreach events, responding to public inquiries via phone and email, and management of four (4) WMAs in Oneida and Herkimer Counties with habitat management, inspections, and upkeep of assets.

Candidate will be required to work in rough terrain, all weather conditions, and carry field equipment. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule when needed to accommodate field work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Preferred: Good communication, organizational, and computer skills. Experience in some phase of hunting and/or trapping and good wildlife identification skills. Wildlife marking and capture experience. Experience using and handling firearms.

Additional Comments

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/28/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Travel may be required.

Overtime may be required.

Overnight travel may be required.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
