Job Description
The Environmental Conservation Department is hiring two Fish and Wildlife Technicians in Potsdam, NY. Responsibilities include assisting with Blanding's turtle conservation, operating traps, managing nesting habitats, conducting surveys, and possibly camping in remote areas. Candidates need relevant coursework in wildlife management and must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. This is a seasonal, part-time position with a pay rate of $19.33 per hour.
The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Candidate will assist with Blanding's turtle conservation efforts throughout the DEC Region 6. Work will include operating turtle traps, maintenance and management of natural and artificial turtle nesting habitats, monitoring turtle nesting habitat use, and nest protection. Work will require orienteering with map, compass, and GPS. Surveys will require working in semi-remote locations during inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures as well as some office data entry time. Must be proficient in use of a canoe. Candidates will also assist with spruce grouse monitoring surveys and translocation efforts and must be willing to camp for 14-day stretches in remote locations during spruce grouse captures in Ontario. Passport or enhanced driver's license will be required by travel dates. Proficiency in orienteering is preferred. A mature individual with good communication skills is also preferred. Candidate will also be responsible for other Wildlife duties as assigned. This position will require some weekend work while in Canada and will require the use of PPE such as gloves, ear and eye protection, and high visibility clothing as necessary.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 8/13/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
