Job Description

Mass Audubon is hiring 4 seasonal Field Teachers in Milton, MA, to lead overnight environmental education trips for 7th graders from Boston Public Schools. Responsibilities include teaching team-building activities, leading hikes, and maintaining safety and educational materials. Candidates should have a passion for nature and teaching, strong communication skills, and the ability to work with diverse groups. Experience in education or childcare is preferred.

About This Position
We are seeking 4 seasonal Field Teachers to work with the education team to teach overnight environmental education field trips for 7th grade classes from the Boston Public School district participating in the Rites of Passage Program. Classes visit Mass Audubon’s Norman Smith Environmental Education Center at Chickatawbut Hill in Milton to learn about Blue Hills ecology, build their school community, and connect with nature and the environment. Field teachers will help prepare for and teach a variety of activities including team building and educational games, leading group hikes, and assisting with food preparation and clean-up.

Responsibilities
• Work as part of the Metro South education team to teach engaging environmental education and team building programs for seventh grade Boston Public School classes
• Become familiar with and teach a variety of team building activities and games
• Engage participants in hands-on learning that develops ecological and conservation knowledge
• Assist in setting up before and cleaning up after programs
• Take participants on hikes throughout the Blue Hills Reservation on steep and uneven terrain
• Maintain educational supplies, curricula, and materials, and resources
• Maintain the safety of all participants

Must Haves
• A love of nature and teaching outdoors with middle school students
• Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education
• Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills
• Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills
• Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
• Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively, as a positive contributor to the team

Nice to Haves
• Experience as an educator, working with school groups in inquiry-based teaching and learning
• Experience working with education animals
• Experience with teambuilding activities
• Experience leading hikes and outdoor activities

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $17.96-$20.20/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.

Work Schedule
This is a part time, per diem position with variable hours starting on March 24, 2025 and ending on June 6, 2025. Rites of Passage programs run from Thursday-Friday. Hours on Thursdays are 9:00am-5:00pm for the day shift and 5:00pm-9:00pm for the night shift. Fridays run from 9:00am-2:00pm. The spring season runs from April 3-May 30 with 7 confirmed programs. Training will occur in late March/early April. There may also be additional opportunities available to help during the week with school field trips.

Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
