Job Description
The Virginia Association for Biological Farming is seeking a full-time, seasonal Farm Manager for Allegheny Mountain Institute in Highland County, VA. The ideal candidate is an experienced organic market farmer with strong leadership skills, committed to sustainable farming and community engagement. Responsibilities include overseeing farm operations, managing a team, and supporting educational programs. The position runs from April to November and requires outdoor work in various conditions.
Location: On-Site at Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) – Highland County, VA
Hours: Full Time, seasonal - April-October
What We’re Looking For:
We’re seeking a creative, passionate, organic market farmer with an integrated, agro-ecological perspective on the role of local ecology and culture in farming practices. Our farm managers are passionate about sustainable farming and food systems, with strong leadership and organizational skills. You should be comfortable working outdoors in diverse conditions and managing multiple aspects of farm operations, from vegetable production to facilities upkeep.
If you thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy mentoring others, and are committed to fostering community connections through food, agro-ecology, and education, this role will be a great fit. A deep understanding of organic and regenerative farming practices is essential, along with the ability to oversee a team and work with other AMI staff to support the organization's mission.
About the Role:
The Farm Manager is responsible for overseeing day-to-day farm operations on Allegheny Farm in Highland County, VA. This role also supports workshops, retreats, and other community programming related to the Allegheny Farm. The position is full-time and exempt, likely supervising farm assistants, and reports to the Executive Director. The season is from April 1 - November
1. Work hours may vary based on farming operations and organizational needs, including some evenings and weekends as required.
