Job Description

AEP is seeking an Environmental Specialist in Columbus, OH, to support Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act compliance for various facilities. The role requires advanced knowledge in environmental regulations, including NPDES permitting and water quality standards. Candidates should have a relevant bachelor's degree, 18 years of experience, and be willing to travel. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $60K–$80K.
Position: Environmental Specialist (Pr-Staff)
Job Summary

Candidate will work in a pivotal role on the Water & Ecological Resource Services team, providing Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act permitting and compliance support to various company facilities, including power generating stations, electric transmission and distribution facilities, service centers, office buildings, and other AEP regulated and commercial operations. The candidate should exhibit expert-level knowledge and proficiency to serve as an advanced technical, regulatory, and policy leader within the organization.

Clean Water Act permitting experience is required. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following subject areas:
• NPDES Permitting - Individual, Multi-Sector, and Stormwater Construction General Permits
• US Army Corps of Engineers permitting
• Section 401 Water Quality Certification
• Other federal, state, and local environmental permits and certifications
• Water quality standard development and implementation
• At-risk Species and Habitat Protection
Key Responsibilities
• Apply advanced environmental knowledge to address complex program-level work.
• Provide leadership in planning, coordination, and oversight of technical and compliance activities.
• Support staff development and lead key department functions such as administrative tasks, budgeting, and business planning.
• Serve as a primary resource for internal and external stakeholders, leading environmental policy development, regulatory programs, and compliance strategies.
• Lead strategic environmental research projects and influence environmental policy and standards.
• Engage stakeholders across the industry and regulatory agencies, and support professional organization leadership roles.
• Make strategic recommendations impacting business objectives and industry standards.Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, natural resources, ecology, or a related field, with an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) or demonstrated capabilities approved by the VP of Environmental Services.
• Minimum of 18 years of environmental experience.
• Physical demand level is Sedentary.
• Willingness to travel periodically and work 40 hours per week, with some overtime.
• Registration in recognized environmental professional associations is encouraged.
