Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for improving oversight of hazardous waste generators and permitted hazardous waste management facilities and serves as a regulatory compliance specialist to promote adherence to all applicable state and department laws, rules, policies, and procedures.

How does it get done?
• Conduct compliance inspections of hazardous waste generators and permitted facilities to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Work Plan Commitments and staff assignments
• Document and respond to environmental complaints and oversee hazardous waste cleanups from incident spills
• Assist in the development of compliance and enforcement efforts
• Review inspection reports and enforcement documents
• Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and guidance documents
• Coordinate rule adoption and authorization with Bureau management
• Perform hazardous waste facility inspections and technical assistance visits
• Educate the public and regulated community on waste management issues as assigned
• Complete technical and regulatory training as assigned and approved

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and two (2) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Moderate physical work will be performed during field inspections and incident responses in all weather conditions including standing, walking, hiking, bending, and lifting. Driving of state vehicles is required. There is also potential exposure to various hazardous materials and conditions during field investigations.
