Bay West is hiring an Environmental Scientist I to operate and maintain groundwater treatment systems at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. This Opportunity
Bay West is seeking a dedicated Environmental Scientist I to support the operation and maintenance of groundwater treatment systems at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina! This hands-on role offers the chance to contribute to critical environmental remediation efforts while gaining practical experience in system operations and data collection.
This is an on-site position based in Sumter, South Carolina. Candidates must reside within or be willing to travel to within one hour of the worksite.
Your Key Responsibilities
• Perform onsite operation and maintenance of groundwater treatment plants located at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina under the direction of local groundwater treatment plan operators.
• Conduct routine inspections including recording system operational data, flow and pressure readings, visual observations, and other observations as needed.
• Conduct routine record keeping and assimilation of data.
• Troubleshoot and fix problems associated with the operation of the groundwater treatment plants.
• Collect permit-related samples from the groundwater treatment plants and prepare the samples for shipment to a laboratory for analysis.
• Oversee and direct subcontractors.
• Communicate with project team, provide updates on work performed, and issues encountered.
• Prepare monthly reports and other documentation as needed.
• Conduct work safely in accordance with project safety plans and provided training.
• Ability to accurately interpret and apply knowledge of environmental theories, processes, and regulations.
• Order supplies and equipment required to operate the groundwater treatment plant.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
• BS - Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science or Related
• 0 to 3 years of experience in environmental role
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook
• 40-hour HAZWOPER or ability to obtain one in 30 days
• Able to obtain site access to secure areas such as Federal sites
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Driver’s license and ability to get to Shaw AFB
• Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and analytical skills
• Willingness to travel to Shaw AFB up to 5 days per week
• Ability to read and understand maps, schematic drawings, diagrams, and instruction manuals.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with operations and maintenance of wastewater or groundwater treatment facilities.
Physical Requirements
• Repetitive motions: substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching)
• Frequent lifts up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period.
• Ability to work outside in varying conditions, such as high heat and high humidity.
• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, and grasping.
