About the position
The Environmental Scientist and Specialist - Advanced position within the Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) is crucial for supporting the administrative permitting program of the Oil Conservation Division's (OCD) Environmental Bureau. This role is designed to ensure that the goals and objectives of the OCD are met effectively. The primary responsibilities include assisting in all aspects of the administrative permitting program, which involves processing and evaluating permit applications, as well as performing field inspections of regulated facilities. The position requires a deep understanding of legal requirements and regulations, particularly those related to the Oil and Gas Act and the Water Quality Act. The successful candidate will also provide expert advice to senior management on legal and management issues, policies, and rules, ensuring compliance with environmental standards. In addition to the administrative duties, the Environmental Scientist and Specialist will play a vital role in coordinating and implementing various OCD programs. This includes ensuring that these programs meet all legal requirements and effectively serve the needs of the oil and gas industry, other state and federal agencies, and the general public. The position is based in Santa Fe but may require travel to any of the five locations: Albuquerque, Artesia, Aztec, Hobbs, or Santa Fe. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental compliance, groundwater or spill remediation, and experience in the oil and gas sector. This role is essential for maintaining the integrity of environmental practices within the industry and ensuring that all operations comply with state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
• Assist in the administrative permitting program of the Oil Conservation Division's Environmental Bureau.

• Process and evaluate permit applications for compliance with legal requirements.

• Perform field inspections of regulated facilities to ensure adherence to environmental standards.

• Advise senior management on legal and management issues related to environmental compliance.

• Support the oil and gas industry, other state and federal agencies, and the general public in environmental matters.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering.

• Five (5) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources.

• Valid driver's license.

• Competitive salary ranging from $61,531 to $98,449 annually.
