About the position

ERT is seeking an environmental scientist to support tasks at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), part of the National Weather Service (NWS), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The primary focus of this role is to develop post-processing and statistical algorithms, including artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance the U.S. CPC International Desk products. The environmental scientist will join a dedicated team of scientists who are engaged in weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and prediction. This team also assesses the impacts of extreme climate events on socio-economic sectors, such as food security and water resource management, on a global scale. The work aims to assist global stakeholders and core partners in protecting the health, safety, and economic needs of the populations they serve. The responsibilities of the environmental scientist include calibrating and post-processing model forecasts, as well as developing flood and drought impact-based forecasts that inform crop production and water resource management. The role also involves evaluating weather and subseasonal-to-seasonal forecast models and documenting the results of these evaluations. A significant aspect of the position is the development of AI and machine learning algorithms that are applied to both observational and model data to enhance forecasting accuracy. The environmental scientist will be expected to run processes on both on-premise computers and in a cloud computing environment, ensuring that the methodologies are robust and scalable.

Responsibilities
• Calibrating and postprocessing model forecasts and developing flood and drought impact-based forecasts on crop production and water resources

• Evaluating weather and subseasonal-to-seasonal forecast models and documenting results

• Developing AI/ML algorithms applied to observational and model data to improve forecasts

• Running processes on on-premise computers and in a cloud computing environment

Requirements
• Experience and strong programming capability in Python
,
• Experience with statistical computational tools such as MATLAB
,
• Experience shell scripting in Unix/Linux, including automating processes
,
• Experience in a cloud computing environment
,
• Experience applying artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to meteorological or oceanographic or environmental data
,
• Experience in the use of remote sensing data, hydrological, and crop data
,
• Knowledge of meteorological data formats, such as GRIB2
,
• Knowledge of meteorological model outputs such as GFS, GEFS, CFS, and the NMME
,
• Knowledge of weather, hydrological, and climate processes
