About The Role
Operating from within the Intensive Livestock Unit, you will be involved in leading innovative service delivery in the environmental regulation of intensive animal industries. You will drive outcome-based approaches that will achieve environmental compliance while reducing regulatory burden in Queensland agriculture industries.
The role will ensure timely and cost effective assessment of new and expanding development proposals. The successful candidate will build strong and productive working relationships with the intensive livestock sector to achieve profitable and sustainable primary industries for Queensland. You will be a member of a fast paced cohesive team that delivers state-wide services and embraces contemporary, best practice regulatory principals that are appropriate and effective.
As Our Environmental Scientist, You Will
• Work in a fast paced cohesive team environment to ensure projects and allocated tasks are completed in a timely manner.
• Assess applications for proposed development and/or activities lodged with the Department or other Queensland Government agencies, including assessment of the environmental risk and providing technical advice regarding approvals and conditioning as it relates to intensive animal industries.
• Actively participate in team planning, discussions and debriefings. Contribute to the organisation and conduct of pre-lodgement meetings, whether in office or site inspections, to advise prospective applicants on relevant application processes, application requirements and other relevant legislative and policy requirements.
• Be responsible for the technical assessment of environmental impact statements on issues such as community amenity (odour/noise/dust/light), surface and ground
water ecosystems, subterranean and terrestrial ecosystems and agricultural land use systems.
• Conduct personal and site safety risk assessments, apply correct sampling and measurement methods and procedures, apply correct monitoring methods and procedures and use of spatial information systems.
• Provide technical support in environmental risk assessment, environmental monitoring, computer modelling, GIS mapping, and compliance advice for new and/or emerging intensive animal management systems.
• Undertake field surveillance and audits to monitor compliance with legislation, environmental codes and standards. The role will involve working in remote locations
after hours.
• Fulfil the duties of an authorised person, with positional delegations, under both the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and the Planning Act 2016.
Essential Requirements
• A degree in Agricultural Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science or Environmental/Agricultural Engineering from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications.
• The position will include travel across regional and remote Queensland and work outside of normal business hours.
• Ability to be appointed as an authorised officer under the Environmental Protection Act 1994
You may also have
• Experience working in a regulatory environment.
• A background in agriculture with a history of working with landholders especially in a regulatory setting.
Licences and registrations
• A current ‘C' class drivers licence
