Job Description

The Environmental Scientist position at North Wind Group in New Mexico involves ensuring compliance with environmental regulations at the White Sands Missile Range. Responsibilities include managing hazardous waste, conducting fieldwork, and supporting waste management operations. Candidates need a Bachelor's degree in environmental science or relevant experience. This full-time role does not require travel and is not remote, as it is based on-site.
Location: White Sands Missile Range, New MexicoTitle: Environmental Scientist Schedule (FT/PT): Regular Full TimeTravel Required: NoClearance: Ability to ObtainThis position is eligible for a Department of Defense SkillBridge Program Internship for active duty servicemembers transitioning out of the U.S. Military.North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management.POSITION PURPOSE: The White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico is a large Army base regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), Federal Executive Orders, and local environmental policies and permits. The purpose of this position is to help WSMR operate in compliance with those environmental regulations.This position will work primarily at the Main Post Hazardous Waste Management Center (HWMC). This position will receive, document, inspect, package, and manage large quantities of waste at a 90-Day Storage Yard and a permitted 1-Year Storage Yard. This position requires knowledge of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, and proper hazardous waste operations and emergency response.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Complete training and retain knowledge of regulatory requirements and site-specific procedures.Demonstrate knowledge of waste management operations including proper labeling, marking, and documentation procedures.Support waste management operations in accordance with established policies and procedures including receipt, packaging, sampling, and handling of containers containing hazardous waste.Prepare, collate, and review waste characterization data and profiles while applying EPA and DOT hazardous waste identification codes.Obtain and review analytical laboratory data and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) to draw conclusions and make recommendations on various waste streams. Operate the United States Army's Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS) database to properly track the waste streams all the way through to disposal at Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs). Update Spill, Evacuation, and Emergency Plans (Quick Reference Guides or QRGs) as needed for Satellite Accumulation Points (SAPs). ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Participate in extensive training and self-study of environmental regulations and procedures related to hazardous waste, universal waste, used oil, drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, air quality, and groundwater. Conduct wide variety of field work including sampling, surveying, inspecting, and testing different types of environmental media.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field or 1 year of professional experience related to waste management combined with education/technical training. Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work accurately, adhere to instructions/procedures, maintain schedules/deadlines and handle multiple priorities.Excellent interpersonal skills; work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, government and military personnel.Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, solve problems, exercise good judgment, work under pressure, and work with minimal supervision.Proficiency with MS Excel and WordCommitment to health and safety in the workplace.Special Requirements: US Citizenship Ability to pass Federal background checkPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 3-4 years of relevant working experience.Current OSHA HAZWOPER certification.Advanced Hazardous Waste Management Certification.DoT HazMat ground shipper certification.Working knowledge of hazardous waste management procedures.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Ability to safely operate equipment including pickup trucks and waste handling equipment such as forklifts, dollies, wrenches, etc.Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and safety operate motor vehicles in traffic and on unimproved roads.WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Outdoors and indoors including warehouse environment. Will include working under difficult conditions with extreme heat, humidity, and wind.
