Job Description

The State of South Carolina is hiring an Environmental Remediation Engineer to work within the Bureau of Land & Waste Management. Responsibilities include evaluating site investigation plans, providing technical assistance, supervising environmental response actions, and project management for hazardous waste sites. Candidates should have a relevant engineering degree and may need to travel for work. This position is not remote and requires physical activity in various conditions.

This engineer associate position is located within the Bureau of Land & Waste Management, Site Assessment, Remediation & Revitalization, State Voluntary Cleanup Section. You will be performing site engineering and screening activities associated with the investigation and cleanup of uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Additionally providing technical assistance to fellow employees, the public, responsible parties, and consultants.

Job Responsibilities:
• Examine and evaluate plans, specs, engineering reports, etc. involving complex methods for site investigation and cleanup actions at uncontrolled sites.
• Provide technical assistance to consultants, state and local governmental officials, and industrial representatives.
• Provide onsite supervision of environmental response actions.
• Prepare reports on response actions for submission to management.
• Assist in preparing contracts and applications pursuant to CERCLA activities.
• Know and apply a combination of engineering technology and federal/state laws to CERCLA activities.
• Perform project management duties for hazardous substance response actions.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A master’s degree in engineering;
or a bachelor’s degree in engineering and one (1) year of experience in environmental engineering;
or a bachelor’s degree in engineering and two years of experience as an engineer.

Engineering students with an anticipated graduation date for Spring 2025 are encouraged to apply. Job offers will be contingent upon completion of their degree and a proof of transcript.

Engineering degree must be accredited by EAC/ABET, CEAB, and Programs Recognized in the ABET “Washington Accord” Listings (Download PDF reader) or you must provide an approved equivalency letter from LLR.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Additional Requirements:
Requires ability to stoop, bend, and climb to collect samples; lift 40 lbs.; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to speak publicly, meet people, and be acceptable in public relations; requires knowledge of environmental investigation and remediation techniques (preferably under CERCLA); ability to analyze documents and files, draw conclusions, and summarize when necessary; ability to provide excellent customer service; and requires a valid SC driver's license.

This position may require in-state and out-of-state travel including some overnight travel. Requires ability to access non-traditional work environments; work in all weather conditions; lift 40 pounds; and to stoop, bend, and climb to collect samples.
