Overview
ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB's New York, New York and Hauppauge, New York offices are seeking an Environmental Planner to join our growing regional planning team. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Environmental Planner applying their diverse knowledge of planning principles and practices to VHB's environmental planning projects across the New York region.
Responsibilities
Participate in the preparation of environmental impact statements and assessments pursuant to the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR), and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), planning and zoning studies, and visual impact analyses.
Participate in the coordination and preparation of local, state, and federal permits for real estate, institutional, transportation, energy, and state and local government projects.
Assist in the coordination of stakeholder outreach and engagement, including public meetings, tribal, federal, and state agency consultation and coordination, and public comment-response tracking.
Conduct site visits and data collection, prepare qualitative and quantitative environmental planning analyses, prepare land use analyses, and conduct historic resources research in support of environmental and planning documents.
Assist Project Managers and Deputy Project Managers in project scope development, cost estimation, staff resource identification, budget tracking, and completion of project management administrative requirements, including preparation of schedules, quality plans, and work plans.
Assist in the coordination of multidisciplinary VHB and subcontracted project teams.
Develop supporting figures and mapping for various projects using GIS and/or CAD.
Skills and Attributes
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Excellent analytical skills, proficiency with qualitative and quantitative research methods
Highly organized
Excel in working in a team environment
Understanding or experience with
SEQRA, CEQR,
NEPA, land use regulations, and sustainability planning is a plus
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to make maps with GIS and/or CAD is required
Familiarity with grant funding programs and/or grant writing experience a plus
Capable of balancing and performing multiple tasks/projects in a professional environment
Qualifications
0-1 years of professional environmental planning and/or permitting experience
BA in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Civil Engineering, Urban Transportation Planning)
Willingness to travel as needed to support projects throughout the region (NYC, Long Island, Westchester, and Hudson Valley)
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City and Hauppauge, New York is $65,000 - $74,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
