The British Antarctic Survey is seeking an Environmental Manager to join their Environment Office team in Cambridge, UK. The role involves conducting environmental impact assessments, managing waste and oil spill responses, and developing environmental policies. British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Environmental
Manager to join our Environment Office team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading
interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different
professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and
support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining our Environment Office Team.

You’ll help us to deliver environmental impact assessments annually for all
our Antarctic science and operations activities, procedures to support waste management and oil
spill response, environmental analysis/reporting and communications and training for our
deployed staff.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop an in depth
understanding of our science and operations activities, the environmental legislation we comply
with and how we manage our environmental risks and strive towards environmental improvements.
There will be an opportunity to contribute to and learn from all areas of Environment Office
activities including: the ISO14001 EMS, managing biosecurity risks to prevent the introduction
of non-native species, environmental policy and strategy work. There will be on the job
training /development, access to BAS training opportunities including role specific training
such as IMO2 oil spill responder, and the opportunity for occasional deployment south. You will
work with departments across BAS including our science, logistics and estates teams and other
teams working on sustainability issues such as our Net Zero Carbon team.

Current projects the team are working on include a review and update of our
BAS environmental strategy, large scale EIAs for the BAS Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation
Programme (AIMP), a full review and
restructure of our Oil Spill Contingency Plans, preparing the annual notification of waste
imports to the UK to comply with the Transfrontier Shipment Regulations, working with the FCDO
and preparing to represent the UK at the annual CEP/ATCM meeting,
bringing the new BAS Supply Chain Logistics warehouse into scope of the EMS, and many others.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:
• Managing the review and approval of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) at the
Preliminary Assessment level, including issuing specialist activity permits and completing post
project compliance reporting.
• Waste management support for BAS stations including review and issue of procedures,
responding to queries from staff, working with UK waste contractors and organising waste import
and collections from a UK port.
• Support with development and review of oil spill response procedures and providing
environmental advice in the event of a spill.

For the role of Environmental Manager, we are looking for somebody with:
• An undergraduate degree in environmental sciences or a related subject.
• Experience or strong knowledge of environmental sustainability management particularly
EIAs, waste management and contingency planning.
• Experience managing tasks from start to completion.
• The ability to research, analyse and interpret data for environmental reporting.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
