Job Description

The City of Albuquerque is hiring an Environmental Health Specialist II for the Permits Program. This role involves inspecting and monitoring facilities for compliance with health codes and regulations, operating technical equipment, and disseminating environmental health information. Candidates should have a relevant Bachelor's degree and four years of experience. A valid New Mexico Driver's License is required. This is a full-time position based in Albuquerque, NM.
About the position

The position involves inspecting, monitoring, and enforcing established health codes, regulations, and ordinances within the assigned area of responsibility. The role requires conducting inspections of assigned facilities to ensure code and regulatory conformance, operating technical equipment, interpreting collected data, and identifying new and unusual situations based on professional knowledge and scientific background. The individual will also disseminate environmental health information to industry, the general public, and other agencies, aiming to reduce the risk and severity of public exposure to environmental health hazards through surveillance and intervention. Additionally, the position entails performing a variety of professional and technical tasks in support of the assigned division.

Responsibilities
• Inspect and monitor assigned facilities for compliance with health codes and regulations.

• Conduct inspections and enforce ordinances, codes, or regulations.

• Operate technical equipment and interpret data collected during inspections.

• Identify and evaluate new and unusual situations based on professional knowledge.

• Disseminate environmental health information to the public and other agencies.

• Reduce public exposure to environmental health hazards through surveillance and intervention.

• Perform various professional and technical tasks in support of the assigned division.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry, mathematics, geology, ecology, biology, or public health.

• Four years of experience monitoring and enforcing ordinances, codes, or regulations.

• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain by date of hire.
,
• Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six months from date of hire.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience in monitoring and enforcing environmental ordinances, codes, or regulations is preferred.

• Knowledge of basic operations and services of environmental monitoring and compliance programs.
,
• Familiarity with recent developments and literature related to compliance activities.
,
• Understanding of methods and techniques of environmental investigation.
,
• Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.
