About the position

The Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist I, II, or III to join our team in Macon-Bibb County. This position is crucial in ensuring compliance with state rules and regulations related to environmental health. The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the County Environmental Health Manager and will be responsible for providing inspection, permitting, and consultation services for various facilities, including food service establishments, public swimming pools, tourist accommodations, and body art facilities. The role also encompasses responsibilities within the Wastewater Management, Well Water, and Emergency Preparedness programs, as well as investigating health-related complaints received from the public. The primary focus of this position will be on the Food Service Program and the On-Site Wastewater Program. The Environmental Health Specialist will play a vital role in protecting the health of the community by ensuring that facilities comply with health standards and regulations. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on work that directly impacts public health and safety. The salary for this position will be adjusted based on prior experience with the Department of Public Health and the level of education attained by the candidate. Responsibilities
• Provide inspection, permitting, and consultation for compliance with state rules and regulations for various facilities.

• Conduct inspections for food service establishments, public swimming pools, tourist accommodations, and body art facilities.

• Engage in Wastewater Management, Well Water, and Emergency Preparedness programs.
,
• Investigate health-related complaints received from the public.
,
• Focus primarily on the Food Service Program and the On-Site Wastewater Program.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including 27 semester or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences.

• For EHS II: one year of full-time professional level environmental health experience equivalent to an Environmental Health Specialist I.
,
• For EHS III: two years of full-time professional level environmental health experience equivalent to an Environmental Health Specialist II.

Nice-to-haves
• Successfully completed the DPH New Hire training courses in General EH, TA/Pools/Spas, Land Use, Food Service, Introduction to Soils, and Level II Soils Training.

• Current and valid certification as an Inspector Level I.
,
• Additional Inspector certifications such as Drip Emitter, Mound/Area Fill, Commercial, Pump-ST, Pump-PS.

• Current Georgia Standardized Food Service Establishment Inspection Officer certification.
,
• Certified Food Safety Manager certification from recognized organizations.
,
• Nationally recognized swimming pool operator course certification.
,
• Successfully completed Blood Borne Pathogens, First Aid, and CPR certification courses.

• Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
