About the position

The Environmental Health Specialist 1 position at the State of Nevada's Health and Human Services is a critical role responsible for ensuring compliance with state laws and regulations related to environmental health. This position involves conducting drug licensing investigations, reviewing labels, sampling, and inspecting drug and cosmetic manufacturing plants. Additionally, the specialist will inspect dairies and milk processing plants, certify septic systems, and oversee food warehouses, traditional food and drink establishments, health facilities, public institutions, and other related facilities. The primary goal is to promote and protect public health and the environment by preventing and mitigating environmental health hazards. Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health Specialist IV, the incumbent will conduct establishment inspections and investigate illnesses and other public health problems. The Environmental Health Section (EHS) is responsible for various functions, including permitting, education, enforcement, consultation, and emergency response. The areas of focus include food protection, bottled water plants and distributors, cosmetic plants, public accommodations, recreational vehicle parks, institutional environmental health, recreational swimming areas and waters, individual sewage disposal systems, invasive body decoration, and emergency preparedness. The role requires the ability to read and understand technical, legal, and scientific documents, as well as to organize material and information systematically to minimize duplication of effort. The specialist must be able to work effectively in environments with frequent interruptions and distractions, such as construction sites and emergencies. Basic math skills are necessary for determining disinfection rates, designing septic systems, and calculating fees. Proficiency in using a personal computer and associated software is also required.
