Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an Environmental, Health & Safety Technician to support safety initiatives at their facilities in Devens and Somerville, MA. The role involves ensuring compliance with OSHA, RCRA, EPA, and DOT regulations, maintaining safety equipment, conducting inspections, and managing hazardous waste. Candidates should have a high school diploma and at least 2 years of experience in a related field.

Join the power movement as an Environmental Health & Safety Technician
The Environmental Health & Safety Technician will support environmental, health and safety initiatives at our Devens, Massachusetts as well as our Somerville, Massachusetts facility. The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Technician will be responsible for regulatory requirements relating to OSHA, RCRA, EPA, and DOT requirements. Works with engineers and technicians daily to ensure our team can achieve its missions while meeting all environmental, health, and safety objectives.
What you'll do:
• Health and Safety:
• Ensure that safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, fall protection equipment, first aid kits, AEDs, safety showers, and eyewash stations are properly maintained, inspected, and serviced according to regulations and manufacturer recommendations
• Ensure that lifting and rigging equipment is being maintained in accordance with regulations and manufacturers recommendations
• Calibrate fixed and portable gas detection devices in accordance with regulations and manufacturers recommendations
• Facilitate safety inspections and audits (e.g., ladders, walking working surfaces) using checklists or guides to ensure equipment and facilities are maintained in a safe and compliant manner
• Provide direct safety oversight by identifying and correcting workplace hazards and unsafe conditions observed
• Assist with employee exposure assessments (i.e., industrial hygiene monitoring)
• Assist in the implementation of site-specific safety programs
• Ensure notification and immediate corrective actions when an unsafe condition is found or reported
• Assist with incident investigations
• Environmental:
• Assist with the management of recyclables, universal waste, waste oil, and hazardous waste
• Monitor levels of hazardous waste in satellite accumulation areas
• Ensure all waste is properly labeled
• Ensure all waste is properly stored, according to its classification
• Record and maintain 90-day hazardous waste drum logs, hazardous waste sign in sheets, VOC solvent usage logs, and related records
• Perform weekly hazardous waste and hazardous material storage area inspections
• Assist in waste shipments with the waste disposal contractor
• Perform weekly stormwater inspections per the SWPPP
• Perform tasks related to spill response/prevention
• Assist with implementing the spill prevention countermeasures and control plan (SPCC)
• Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits
What we’re looking for:
• High school diploma or equivalency certificate
• 2+ years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects related to an environmental, health and safety program
• Previous experience in a construction/industrial environment
• Ability to work in a high-volume, fast paced environment
• Required experience in performing safety oversight in an industrial environment
• Requirement of knowledge of regulatory requirements from agencies like OSHA, EPA, DEC, RCRA, and others
Bonus points for:
• Experience in managing hazardous waste storage and satellite accumulation areas
• Experience implementing/developing health and safety plans and programs
• Experience with emergency response incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
• Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits
• Ability to multitask, to manage shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
• Strong organizational and communication skills
Must-have requirements:
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
• Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
• Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
• Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
