Job Description
The University System of New Hampshire is hiring an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to support laboratory and radiation safety programs at the Durham campus. Responsibilities include coordinating safety tests, training students, managing chemical inventories, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The role requires on-site work and involves performing inspections, data entry, and assisting with hazardous materials shipping.

Under direction of the Laboratory Safety Officer, supports the Laboratory Safety Program, Radiation Safety Program, and administration of UNHCEMS. Tasks are in the area of laboratory safety, chemical safety, chemical environmental management, chemical inventory management, environmental compliance, radiation safety, and safety training.
This role requires working on-site at the Durham campus.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Coordinates chemical fume hood tests according to the UNH Laboratory Ventilation Management Program or corresponding UNH policy.
• Trains hourly students to perform fume hood tests and perform data entry.
• Communicates test results to affected parties as necessary.
• Performs data entry to record test results.
• Reports maintenance issues as necessary and follows up to confirm work is complete.
• Generates reports to determine reliability of chemical fume hood operation and face velocity monitors.
• Ensures chemical fume hood test equipment is properly maintained and calibrated on a regular basis.
• Coordinates daily operation of the UNH Chemical Transfer Station (CTS).
• Trains and supervises students and others others working in the CTS.
• When student staff is not available, or as necessary, receives and barcodes incoming chemical packages.
• Manages the receipt and barcoding of incoming chemicals, as well as their delivery to users on campus.
• Coordinates daily operation of the UNH Chemical Transfer Station (CTS) where chemicals are received.
• Inputs inventory details into UNHCEMS and saves the corresponding SDS.
• With limited oversight from the Laboratory Safety Officer, performs safety inspections of UNH facilities, especially research laboratories and teaching laboratories, for compliance with UNH safety policies, RCRA hazardous waste regulations, OSHA regulations, and NFPA standards.
• Prepares reports to be distributed to responsible parties, and follows up as necessary.
• With limited oversight from the Laboratory Safety Officer, performs safety training related to use of chemical fume hoods and chemical safety for laboratory workers.
• Assists the Radiation Safety Officer with radioactive waste pickups and associated data entry, delivery of new radioactive materials, laboratory surveys and other contamination surveys, and dosimetry distribution.
• Perform survey meter calibration pickup and delivery.
• Assists the UNHCEMS Coordinator with chemical inventory verification projects including leading teams of scanners, performing data entry, communicating with building contacts, and preparing door caution signs.
• Performs administrative functions in UNHCEMS to assist in maintaining accurate chemical inventories, training records, user accounts, door caution signs, fume hood test records and others as necessary.
• Assists the Laboratory Safety Officer with the Hazardous Materials Shipping Program.
• Assists with updating guidance documents, preparing shipping protocols, and preparing packages for shipment.
• Selects, trains, and supervises hourly students to perform tasks related to the Chemical Transfer Station, chemical fume hood testing, and other laboratory safety related projects and programs.
• Serves on safety committees/councils as requested such as the Chemical Safety Committee.
• Participates in institutional professional development and training such as NH DES Hazardous Waste Coordinator Training, DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping Training, and Dangerous Goods by Air Shipping Training.
• Performs other laboratory safety related tasks as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Valid Driver's License
• Sufficient manual dexterity to perform duties of position.
• Must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment, such as lab coat, safety glasses and disposable gloves, as necessary
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person with campus stakeholders.
• Degree in safety studies or equivalent academic safety program.
• Experience performing safety inspections and safety training.
• Experience testing chemical fume hoods
• Experience working in a research laboratory environment.
• Experience performing tasks related to radiation safety principles and practices.
• Current DOT/IATA hazardous materials shipping training.
Upon hiring, the individual must successfully complete the following:
• Defensive Driving Course
• DOT and IATA Hazardous Materials Transportation Training
• UNH EHS safety training courses
• New Hampshire Hazardous Waste Coordinator Certification Training.
