Environmental Health & Safety Officer

Environmental Health & Safety Officer

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the Environmental Health & Safety for the entire Spuntech Roxboro facility. The duties outlined in this Job Description are expected to be completed in a professional, safe and quality minded manner, and per all Company Policies, Procedures and additional expectations as outlined by the Plant / Site Manager.

Major Job Responsibilities:
• Perform job duties in compliance with site safety rules, with the intent of supporting an injury-free work environment.
• Notify the Plant / Site Manager of any safety system malfunctions, violations and any potential risks.
• Demonstrate leadership and commitment to the site safety, environmental and quality management system through personal accountability, systems integration, and risk-based thinking.
• Create and consult in plant procedures and documentation.
• Review changes, and installation to ensure compliance with safety and environmental concerns and regulations.
• Foster an open and cooperative relationship with the employees and departments on site.
• Coordinate and administer chemical safety and hazard communication programs including spill response and prevention.
• Lead/Manage safety and environmental incident investigations and responses.
• Ensure Safety assessments are completed and reviewed in timely fashion.
• Administer, audit, and consult in the creation of Job Hazard Analysis throughout facility.
• Organize, facilitate, and at times perform safety training. Training and education – Provide needed training to employees on safety protocols, proper handling techniques, and emergency response procedures.
• Manage plant environmental responsibilities including
• Managing waste streams (including hazardous).
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
• Complete quarterly and annual reporting on Greenhouse gasses, resource consumption and waste.
• Responsible for preparing daily, weekly and monthly Safety reports
• Review and prepare changes in ISO work instructions and procedures
• Responsible for chemical storage and hazardous waste removal & safety and hazardous waste safety. Remaining compliant with all OSHA & ISO 14001, 45001 Standards
• Involved in all OSHA inspections including discussions with OSHA regarding final citation language, abatement requirements and dates as well as related penalties.
• Completes internal audits for OSHA compliance and assists with development of abatement recommendations as required.
• Owns site security program to ensure associate safety and protection of company property. and partners with Maintenance and IT for assistance
• Maintains professional internal working relationships as well as with state and federal OSHA agencies and acts as Company’s liaison with these organizations
• Maintains Personal Protective Equipment inventory and purchases (boots, safety shoe program, safety glasses) and other PPE as deemed necessary.
• Maintains relationships with vendors for medical devices and supplies.
• Interface with production team members, R&D, sales, production and maintenance floor staff, and operations managers, using proven interpersonal skills to implement programs

Additional Job-Related Responsibilities:
• Maintains professional internal working relationships as well as with state and federal OSHA agencies and acts as Company’s liaison with these organizations
• Interface with production team members, R&D, sales, production and maintenance floor staff, and operations managers, using proven interpersonal skills to implement programs
• Partners with management team to ensure safety program compliance. Assists management with the coordination of Company industrial hygiene programs to ensure compliance and necessary training
• Partners with Human Resources to coordinate the administration of the Workers’ Compensation programs to ensure effective case management. Partners with HR to establish and maintain a relationship with local Occupational Health Clinic.
• Participate as an ISO internal auditor

Job Specific Requirements:

Physicality:
• Able to consistently lift items 25 – 50 lbs.
• Occasionally lift items 50 – 100 lbs.
• Sit or Stand for 8 – 12 hours per shift

Expected Work Schedule / Shift:
• Regular schedule is 8 hrs a day, Monday – Friday
• Alternate schedules / weekends may apply to implement and support safety related programs
• Be on call 24 hours a day to respond to safety and environmental incidents

Education / Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in one of the following:
• Environmental Health & Safety
• Occupational Health & Safety
• Industrial Hygiene
• Science-related field, such as chemistry, biology, environmental science, engineering, or fire protection

Additional:
• 2-5 years’ experience in Industrial Safety
• OSHA 30 certification
• Experience in application and compliance with ISO 9001/14001/ 45001 regulations
• ISO 9001/14001/45001 Internal Auditor
• CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
• COSS (Certified Occupational Safety Specialist)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to train and educate others
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Computer Skills (Microsoft Office)
