About the position

If you answered Yes! to the above, Kongsberg Automotive in Suffield, CT has a great opportunity for you. Our fast-paced, 7 day manufacturing operation is seeking a dynamic HSE expert to take us to the next level. As the HSE Engineer, you will be responsible for the coordination of all OSHA management programs, the development of new and approved HSE training programs, ensuring compliance to all agency regulations, implementing ISO 45000-1, leading a cross-functional HSE Committee and the creation of an enhanced first-responder program.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for the coordination of the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental management programs, including training and other instruction in the safe handling and use of company products, materials, and/or equipment.
• Responsible for the administration, development, improvement, and coordination of the facilities’ HSE employee training program.
• Ensures compliance with accepted health, safety and environmental standards and applicable laws
• Ensures compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)and State of Connecticut rules and regulations, completing and maintaining reports, obtaining permits if required, and guiding management on operational activities regarding EPA compliance.
• Acts as company liaison with government agencies, inspectors, insurance inspectors, local fire department and others in similar capacity and authority.
• Ensures that environmental management system requirements are established, implemented, and maintained in accordance with ISO 14001.
• Performs HSE inspections, recommends modifications, improvements, or changes necessary to maintain compliance with laws and best practices. Document inspections and track closure of findings.
• Assures facility complies with KA’s HSE Minimum Requirements.
• Coordinates collecting and reporting of KA’s HSE related KPIs.
• Investigates all on-site injuries and illnesses, completes reports, and maintains files as required.
• Maintains active in-house joint health and safety team, develops and monitors performance to plant safety goals.
• Ensures that trained first aid personnel, first responders, and medical supplies are adequate for plant requirements.
• Develops and implements required safety and environmental training such as Hazard Communication, Personal Protective Equipment, Lockout/Tagout, Hazardous Waste etc
• Reports on the performance of the environmental management system to top management for review and as a basis for improvement of the environmental management system.
• Ensure all legislative requirements of the OSHA are met by performing regular workplace inspections, conducting safety talks, staff meetings, tail gate meetings, being involved in the accident/incident investigation program, training new employees, correcting unsafe acts or conditions, correct or commend health and safety performance.
• Ensures that the facilities training program meets the requirements of our employees and customers in adherence to IATF16949.
Other duties of the Health/Safety/Environmental Engineer consists of, but are not limited to the following activities:
• Perform work in compliance with KA standards, Federal and state HSE laws and regulations
• Use or wear the personal protective equipment required by Kongsberg Automotive
• Report immediately to Plant Manager any known absence or defect of any safety devices or any defects on any equipment that may endanger another co-worker
• Report immediately to Plant Manager any known absence or defect of any environmental control or any deviations of processes or equipment that may endanger the environment or health of community/employees.
• Report any near misses and/or accidents immediately to plant management whether or not the incident results in an injury
• Report any unsafe actions, behaviors, and/or violations that you observe or aware of according to local procedures.
Education:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences, Industrial/Environmental, Safety/Engineering or related field or Associates Degree plus 5 years equivalent experience.
Work experience:
• 3 years of Industrial Environmental/Manufacturing Experience
Requirements
The incumbent HSE Engineer will demonstrate:
• Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Industrial/Environmental, Safety/Engineering or related field. Associate's degree plus 3 years experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment will be considered.
• Experience with OSHA, EPA, CT DEEP, ISO 14000-1/45000-1 required; IATF 16949 preferred
