Job Responsibilities:
Manages a comprehensive district wide public health environmental health program of regulatory review and enforcement in the area of environmental health. Directs subordinate staff.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
• Conducts research pertaining to environmental and energy related issues in order to develop needed plans and policies
• Directs environmental health or protection program activities that provide technical assistance and regulatory interpretation of environmental health/protection laws to other agencies and the public
• Manages human resources and directs administrative activities for environmental health/protection employees
• May manage/monitor budgets, grants and/or other funding sources relative to an environmental program
• Provides technical expertise and testimony regarding complex environmental issues
• Recommends and assists with preparation and/or drafting of proposed (or desired changes in) laws, regulations, and rules needed for optimum management of the environment
• Directs subordinate supervisors and staff
• Will manage large numbers of agency staff or have large scope of responsibility with agency
• Conducts administrative duties to include training, data management, general correspondence, and equipment maintenance
• Creates and maintains a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation
• Develops and manages environmental health programs to meet the environmental health needs of the assigned county
• May coordinate or implement comprehensive injury prevention and safety programs
• Provides direct service in special programs and highly technical fields and initiates, negotiates, and implements public health enforcement actions as appropriate
• Reviews and/or prepares applications, permits and technical reports

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which included the completion of 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory science (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) and four (4) years of full-time professional level experience equivalent to a PH Envir Compl Specialist 4 (RCP123), which includes two (2) years in a lead worker, team leader, or supervisory role; or three (3) years as a County Mgr. PH Environ Hlth (RCM060) or position equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or related field;
• Current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association or an equivalent recognized credentialing board.
• Training: Fundamentals of the Georgia PMP;
• Completion of NIMS courses 100, 200, 700, and 800.
• Completion of Manager or Leadership Development program
• Completion of NIMS 300 and 400.

The use of breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and assist employees in meeting their goals. A maximum of 30 minutes in a given workday may be used to engage in physical activities, generally in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.
Employment Information
All approved teleworking employees must reside within the state of Georgia and depending on the responsibilities of the position, must live within reasonable driving distance of the agency’s primary worksite and be able to report to the office when required.
Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.
DPH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degree, diploma, licensure, etc.
