About the position
The Field Service Technician / Entry Level Geologist position at Montrose involves a range of responsibilities focused on environmental monitoring and compliance. This role is essential for supporting the Environmental Engineering and Consulting team in delivering solutions for complex environmental challenges. The technician will operate field monitoring equipment, collect samples, document results, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards while interacting with clients and managing hazardous materials.
Responsibilities
• Serves as Team Lead and provides training and direction to other staff.
,
• Operates field monitoring equipment including PID/FID, pH, EC, DO, GEM, turbidity, water level, LEL meters, and geolocating equipment.
,
• Documents monitoring and testing results on field forms and prepares daily reports and data sheets.
,
• Collects samples using various sampling methods.
,
• Conducts environmental collection, monitoring, sampling, testing, and basic evaluation at various locations.
,
• Performs operations and maintenance (O&M) on environmental treatment equipment.
,
• Completes Chain-of-Custody forms and labels samples, following regulatory handling and preservation protocols.
,
• Delivers samples to an environmental laboratory.
,
• Interacts with clients and presents a professional appearance on job sites.
,
• Measures and records treatment operational data.
,
• Enters monitoring data from field inspection forms into electronic spreadsheets.
,
• Ensures proper labeling and handling of hazardous material and waste.
,
• Communicates promptly with Project Managers about site conditions and activities.
,
• Troubleshoots and repairs mechanical system issues or failures.
,
• Manages proper disposal for hazardous material and waste.
,
• Maintains confidentiality at all times.
,
• Exercises safe work practices by following all company safety rules and OSHA regulations.
,
• Participates in the company's continuous improvement programs and supports team efforts.
,
• Keeps up-to-date on industry trends through training and professional publications.
Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
,
• 3+ years of experience in environmental collection, monitoring, sampling, testing, and basic evaluation, or a Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Sciences, or Engineering in lieu of experience.
,
• Valid Class C driver's license with a clean driving record.
,
• Ability/willingness to travel.
,
• Complete and maintain HAZWOPER certification with the 40-hour HAZWOPER environmental health and safety class and annual 8-hour refresher classes.
,
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
,
• Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
,
• Ability to deliver and receive electronic documents.
,
• Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management.

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
,
• Solid organization and time/project management skills.
,
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with legible handwriting.

• Ability to work independently.
Nice-to-haves
• Familiarity with supervision of construction projects.
,
• 5+ years of experience in environmental collection, monitoring, sampling, testing, and basic evaluation.

• Familiarity with Florida Department of Environmental Protection Petroleum Restoration Program Regulations and Standard Operating Procedures.

• Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of remediation systems, including advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
