The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo has one open position for a PhD student to contribute to a project investigating the fate of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in full-scale water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Research will involve implementing analytical methodologies to quantify PFAS and total organic fluorine (TOF) at various locations within sewersheds and WRRFs for the purpose of estimating PFAS mass flows and fate throughout the facilities. The candidate will develop advanced fingerprinting methods for identification of PFAS sources to sewer systems.

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Drs. Anh Pham and Wayne Parker, starting from September 1, 2025. Applicants with a background in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other relevant areas are preferred.
