Job Description

The State of Montana is seeking an Environmental Enforcement Specialist to investigate environmental violations, provide compliance assistance, and communicate with stakeholders. Responsibilities include conducting audits, field inspections, and reporting. Candidates should have a relevant Bachelor's degree and two years of experience. The role promotes professional growth and may allow for part-time telework. The position supports a healthy environment in Montana through collaboration and effective decision-making.
Environmental Enforcement Specialists investigate potential environmental violations related to 15 regulated media types, and when determined to be valid, provide compliance assistance to resolve the violations and return sites back to compliance in a timely manner. Specialists communicate with responsible parties and concerned citizens via phone calls, emails, and letters to answer questions on environmental laws and regulations. Specialists collaborate with attorneys, consultants, internal and external stakeholders and/or partner agencies, providing guidance to help facilitate compliance and timely resolution of violations. Specialists perform desk audits, field inspections, take samples, write reports, and make risk-based determinations on appropriate actions to resolve violations. Specialists recommend enforcement approaches, calculate penalties, lead negotiations, and testify in court. Qualifications
• Bachelor's of Science degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Health Science, or any field related to environmental program management.
• Two years of environmentally related work experience involving field work with preferred skills in environmental sampling and interpretation of analytical results.
• Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication.
• Occupational experience with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, and Excel, Teams, etc), Adobe Acrobat, GPS, digital camera, and scientific sampling and/ or monitoring equipment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Level 200 Incident Command System (ICS) training.
• Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy
