What is the Opportunity?

Aecon Civil East is at the forefront of delivering transformative infrastructure projects across Ontario, with a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. We are seeking an Environmental Director to lead our environmental management initiatives, ensuring that all projects comply with environmental regulations and uphold Aecon’s dedication to sustainable practices.

The Environmental Director will serve as the primary authority on environmental matters, collaborating with project teams, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to uphold Aecon’s dedication to environmental excellence. We are continuously seeking top talent to build a strong pipeline for future/upcoming projects.

What You’ll Do Here:
• Develop and implement environmental strategies that align with Aecon’s sustainability objectives and project goals.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including federal, provincial, and municipal laws, as well as industry standards.
• Identify and manage environmental risks throughout the project lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and decommissioning.
• Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, industry associations, and community stakeholders on environmental issues.
• Lead environmental assessments and permitting processes, ensuring timely approvals and adherence to project schedules.
• Promote sustainable construction practices, such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and resource conservation.
• Oversee the implementation and maintenance of Environmental Management systems (EMS) in line with ISO 14001 standards.
• Conduct environmental training and awareness programs for project staff and subcontractors.
• Monitor and report on environmental performance metrics, driving continuous improvement initiatives.

What You Bring to the Team:
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in environmental management, regulatory compliance, or sustainability within the construction or infrastructure sectors.
• In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and standards, including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act.
• Professional certifications such as Registered Environmental Manager (REM) or Canadian Environmental Professional (EP) are considered assets.
• Proven experience in environmental risk assessment and mitigation on large-scale projects.
• Strong leadership with the ability to influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
• Experience with Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and familiarity with ISO 14001 certification processes.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with experience engaging regulatory agencies and community stakeholders.
