Job Description

NiSource is seeking an Environmental Coordinator in Merrillville, IN, responsible for ensuring safety, managing groundwater monitoring compliance, supporting closure plans, and handling environmental liabilities. The role involves budget management, regulatory interactions, and conducting inspections. Candidates should have a relevant degree, five years of experience in environmental remediation, and strong analytical skills. The position requires travel and is not remote.

Description

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities of this Coordinator position include, but are not limited to:
• Promote and ensure a safe working environment and public safety.
• Operate in a manner consistent with NiSource Core Values.
• Comply with company policies, procedures, and directives from management.
• Manage the NIPSCO groundwater monitoring program for compliance with federal CCR rules and state regulations.
• Support the CCR Team in designing and executing closure plans for CCR impoundments and management units.
• Assist with managing and closing environmental liabilities, including CCR units, MGPs, and retired facilities.
• Assist in environmental Due Diligence reviews.
• Handle activities related to budgeting, forecasting, and cost modeling.
• Represent the company in interactions with regulatory agencies.
• Develop and oversee investigation studies and remedial actions.
• Conduct compliance inspections and assist with environmental audits.
• Coordinate environmental activities to ensure proper program and permit implementation.
• Collect and review project data, develop work plans, review reports, interpret regulations, and manage consultants and contractors.

Additional duties include:
• Maintain knowledge of current environmental regulations.
• Analyze and interpret environmental rules and policies.
• Prepare formal comments on proposed regulations.
• Work with communication teams on community relation plans for remediation projects.
• Review data and formulate recommendations with third-party consultants.
• Manage spill response activities.
• Identify opportunities for environmental improvement.
• Communicate effectively with business partners regarding environmental liabilities and project status.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications include:
• Bachelor’s degree in science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 5 years of experience in environmental remediation or CCR compliance.
• Experience managing third-party vendors.
• Knowledge of groundwater remediation techniques.
• Budget and forecast management skills.
• Self-starter with initiative, able to work independently and in teams.
• Strong technical, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to interpret technical data related to environmental media.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations like RCRA, CERCLA, NPDES, SPCC.
• Proficiency with spreadsheets and word processing software.
• Willingness to travel.

Preferred additional qualifications:
• M.S. in an environmental field.
• Experience with groundwater monitoring and MGP remediation.
• Experience managing construction/demolition activities.
• Project management skills.
• Knowledge of natural gas or electric operations.
• OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification.
• Ability to analyze and communicate environmental data effectively.
