Network Rail is seeking an Environment Specialist for a full-time, permanent role based in York, UK, with hybrid working (minimum 3 days in the office). 28 days annual leave + bank holidays

Transpennine Route Upgrade

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is the largest Infrastructure project in the North delivering £10.7 billion Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 11 level crossings.

Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.

Brief Description

Provide environmental expertise across the Transpennine Route Upgrade. Support the TRU Programme Environment Manager by collaborating with and assuring design and construction delivery partners. Support in ensuring the programme is environmentally compliant and working towards sustainability targets and objectives within the TRU Sustainable Development Strategy ‘Our Guiding Compass’.

About The Role (External)

Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:
• Provide expert support and guidance on all environmental matters to help deliver legislative compliance.
• Assure environmental documents produced by delivery partners such as environment and social management plans and incident response plans.
• Support with environmental audits and inspections.
• Monitor closeout of environmental non-conformances.
• Help collate periodic and quarterly reporting.

We need you to have:
• Good understanding of UK and European environmental legislation and regulation.
• Good understanding of environmental management system
• Knowledge of maintenance delivery process and techniques
• Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisational skills

It would be advantageous if you have:
• Knowledge of operational railway environment
• Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard
• Good understanding of NR/L2/ENV/015 and experience implementing.
• Experience of providing environmental support on multidiscipline railway design and construction projects.
• Experience of embedding BREEAM Infrastructure
• Membership of professional body (E.g., Practitioner IEMA, PIEMA or equivalent).
