The role involves providing expert support for environmental compliance and sustainability performance, including risk assessments, management plans, and stakeholder coordination. Responsibilities include audits, inspections, and reporting to ensure adherence to environmental legislation and sustainability objectives. This full-time contract position requires a proactive individual who can handle a variety of tasks in a dynamic environment.

Description

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Environmental and Sustainability Specialist who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The is an FTE Contract position based in Brisbane, Australia.

About the Position

This role provides expert Environmental and Sustainability support to our business operations. The primary purpose is to ensure continuous improvement in environmental and sustainability performance, good corporate governance of environmental and sustainability requirements, and ensure that business wide and local processes are in place to ensure Hitachi Rail fulfil its compliance obligations. The secondary purpose is to support the APAC Environmental Specialist and Project Management Team to provide expert advice, support, and coordination to maintain compliance with Environmental and Sustainability legislation GBMS and client requirements.

Project related responsibilities (QLD)

Environmental Management
• Undertaking environmental risk assessment
• Development and update of Environmental Management Plans as per stakeholder requirements including the approval of documentation prior to construction activities
• Completion and submission of Environmental in Design report alongside design reports.
• Completion of EPBC Self-Assessment for any works outside of defined project boundary to ensure environmental requirements are compliant with
• Liaise with stakeholders on approval on the EPBC Self-Assessment outcomes.
• Completing any permits and approvals as may be required for the project works such as vegetation permits etc.
• Ensuring the project team is inducted on Cultural Heritage Management Plan
• Running Environmental risk workshops when there is a need identified
• Ensuring compliance with the approved Environmental Management Plan (Construction) such as undertaking audits, site inspections as defined in the plan.
• Undertaking Predictive Noise modelling and development of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans and ensuring compliance with the control measures (through onsite checks)
• Working with internal teams to develop Toolbox Talks on environmental management
• Maintaining records of various assessments such as noise modelling, waste receipts, ESCP, etc. for smooth handover at the end of the project.
• Completing monthly reporting

Sustainability Management
• Undertaking Sustainability risk assessment for the project.
• If the project is asking for informal or formal* IS Rating, liaise and work with internal teams to identify the IS credits aiming for and lay out the requirements and identify what will be needed to achieve those credits.
• Submission of sustainability assessment to the client and hold a workshop with the client to agree on the sustainability objectives and targets
• Work with the internal teams to achieve the objectives and targets
• Complete a monthly report on the progression of the sustainability objectives and targets

Environmental and Sustainability (other)
• Draft responses for bids
• Be involved in various Environmental and sustainability working groups to stay connected and stay informed on the industrial changes and progress.

Required Skills/Knowledge:
• A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental discipline.
• Competent / certified auditor for ISO 14001.
• Lead Investigator Qualification.
• A sound knowledge of the Australian legal framework, State Legislation, and environmental management systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills including network-building, problem solving and the ability to work with and influence people at all levels.
• The ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with internal and external stakeholders.
• Be someone who can bring a passion to be the best to Hitachi Rail with a ‘can do’ attitude.
• Have a commitment to work as part of a team within the HSE department and collaborate with other support functions.
• Have report writing and data capture experience with ability to produce reports.
• Have a detailed understanding of the environmental legislative framework.
• Have experience in developing and introducing environmental policies and procedures for standardisation across Hitachi Rail.
• Have experience in meeting deadlines and working alone and as part of a team to achieve targeted goals.

Desirable Skills/Knowledge:
• Health and safety knowledge.
• An understanding of ISO 9001 and ISO 45001; and
• Internal auditor or Lead auditor training.
