Job Description

The Energy Management Specialist at Gay Lea Foods will advance sustainability goals by managing energy initiatives and utility reduction projects, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. Responsibilities include carbon accounting, energy assessments, and project management. The role requires collaboration with various departments and compliance with regulations. A CEM designation and relevant experience are mandatory. This position is hybrid, requiring site visits across Canada multiple times a year.
Location: Head Office – Mississauga, ON

Hybrid with expectation to visit all sites multiple times/year (ON, MB, AB, BC)

Reports to: Senior Manager, Corporate Sustainability

Position Overview: The Energy Management Specialist will play a critical role in advancing our sustainability goals by collaborating with engineering and operations departments to drive energy management initiatives and utility reduction projects. This project-oriented role involves managing multiple projects at various stages, all aimed at reducing facility greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct carbon accounting and manage greenhouse gas inventories aligned with recognized reporting frameworks such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
• Conduct comprehensive energy assessments to identify opportunities for energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in our facilities.
• Develop, manage, and support implementation of energy-saving and greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects, ensuring adherence to budget, quality, and time objectives.
• Lead the management of the Energy Management Program and Emissions Performance Standards Program for participating sites.
• Monitor and report on site greenhouse gas emissions and the performance of energy initiatives, providing regular updates to senior management.
• Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and utility providers to optimize energy usage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
• Lead the management of carbon taxes and Global Adjustment charges to minimize costs.
• Train employees on energy conservation practices and promote a culture of sustainability within the organization.
• Stay current with the latest energy technologies and practices relevant to the food processing industry.
• Ensure energy management practices comply with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
• Develop and manage the annual energy budget and forecast future energy needs.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for all energy-related matters within the company.

Requirements:
• Certified Energy Management Specialist (CEM) designation is mandatory.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field is an asset.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in energy management, preferably in the manufacturing or food processing industry.
• Experience in carbon accounting, including conducting greenhouse gas emissions inventories and using carbon management software.
• Familiarity with frameworks such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ISO 14064, or similar standards.
• Fundamental understanding of boilers, refrigeration systems, and their role in energy and GHG management.
• Demonstrated success in conducting energy and carbon assessments, retrofits, and implementing energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects.
• Knowledge of energy benchmarking, carbon offsets, and renewable energy technologies.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to train, influence, and motivate employees.
• Proficient in using energy management information systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Power BI.
• Willingness to travel within and outside of Ontario as required.
