Stipend and Allowances

This program offers competitive stipends to participants. Exact stipends vary based upon academic and professional background. For those with significant academic background and/or professional experience following their degree, stipends will be determined on an individual basis. Stipends start at $65,000 for a bachelor’s degree.

This program also offers a range of additional allowances including: a medical insurance supplement, dental and vision insurance supplement in select sponsoring offices, a local transportation stipend, paid leave, and scheduled absences observed during federal holidays. A minimum relocation reimbursement of $5,000 will be issued to offset expenses incurred in relocating from current address to Washington, D.C. or Golden, CO (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application). Participants will receive a travel and research allowance of $10,000 per appointment year to cover expenses for scientific and professional development activities. Past fellows have gone on to take a wide range of permanent positions in industry, academia, and government.

Fellows may be offered an appointment extension for up to five years, with an increase in stipend and cost of living adjustment at discretion of the sponsoring office.

Appointment Start Date

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected applicant. Nature of the Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE letter of appointment and Terms of Appointment.
