About the position

The University of Virginia's Office for Sustainability is seeking both an Energy and Sustainability Engineering Associate and Engineer. These positions are integral to achieving the university's sustainability goals, including carbon neutrality by 2030 and being fossil fuel-free by 2050. The roles involve collaboration on innovative projects that enhance energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and optimizing resource use.

Responsibilities
• Collaborate with clients and provide excellent customer service in resolving customer service inquiries.

• Conduct timely and comprehensive design reviews of sustainability issues for new construction or renovation projects, acting as an owner's representative for sustainability as needed.

• Foster a safe work environment by complying with all OSHA, BOCA, federal, state, and local regulations.
,
• Support innovative building efficiency projects, incorporating best practices in sustainability.
,
• Manage project implementation to ensure timely completion with minimal disruptions.
,
• Calculate payback periods for conservation and investment.
,
• Document achievements and assist in communication material development.
,
• Identify and implement sustainability opportunities through trend analysis.
,
• Perform construction project reviews for compliance with UVA's Green Building Standards.
,
• Assist with LEED certification and provide guidance to the community.
,
• Develop engaging educational materials for occupants and maintenance personnel.
,
• Train maintenance staff on sustainability initiatives.
,
• Enhance preventive maintenance to support sustainability.
,
• Inspect, evaluate, and solve building system deficiencies.
,
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams for audits and improvements.
,
• Organize and lead energy audits and site visits with stakeholders including Architects and Engineers.
,
• Discover the source of deficiencies in building systems, recommending retrofit scopes and develop project budgets.
,
• Develop and manage building efficiency projects from inception to completion.
,
• Ensure compliance and track progress for building energy efficiency projects.
,
• Document progress and collaborate with stakeholders on initiatives and projects.
,
• Coordinate with staff and stakeholders on building modifications to reduce energy usage.
,
• Identify and instruct key team members to implement building efficiency recommendations.
,
• Evaluate economic feasibility of developing innovative energy and controls technology.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, sustainable design, architecture, landscape architecture, land use planning, environmental science, environment planning, or similar field for Associate Engineer; Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related engineering field for Engineer.

• Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in an engineering-related field for Associate Engineer; 7 years of related experience for Engineer.

Nice-to-haves
• Four years of experience with HVAC and controls design or project management, commissioning, energy performance contracting for Associate Engineer.

• Accreditation as EIT (Engineering in Training) or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer, ASHRAE Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), LEED Green Associate, LEED Accredited Professional, CEM (Certified Energy Manager) for Associate Engineer.

• Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) for Engineer.
,
• Experience with laboratory and/or healthcare HVAC design or commissioning for Engineer.

• Full-time, 40 hour per week exempt positions with UVA benefits.
