Job Description
Position Summary:
The EHS Specialist supports the Environmental, Health, and Safety program within the Coil Coating facility in Hammond. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, and state regulations; conducts audits and training; assists with incident investigations; and supports continuous improvement of EHS performance. The EHS Specialist works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality teams to maintain a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible coil coating operation.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Compliance & Program Administration
Conduct routine EHS inspections and audits of the coil coating line, chemical storage, ovens, pits, and ventilation systems. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, including LOTO, hazard communication, machine guarding, PPE, confined space, hot work, and electrical safety. Maintain safety documentation, permits, SDS records, incident logs, and compliance files. Track leading and lagging indicators, safety metrics, and EHS KPIs. Environmental Compliance Assist in maintaining environmental permits related to VOC emissions, hazardous waste, wastewater, coatings, and chemical handling. Conduct waste labeling, storage, and disposal inspections to ensure compliance with EPA and state requirements. Support air quality testing, emissions monitoring, and environmental reporting. Ensure proper handling and storage of coatings, solvents, and flammable materials. Training & Employee Engagement Deliver EHS training for coil coating employees, including hazard communication, PPE, spill response, LOTO, forklift operation, emergency procedures, and job-specific safety topics. Maintain training records and ensure timely renewal of required certifications. Promote a safety-first culture through employee engagement, coaching, and non-punitive reporting systems. Incident Management & Investigations Respond to injuries, environmental events, and near misses; provide immediate support to operations. Lead or assist with root cause investigations using corrective action tools (5-Why, Fishbone, RCA). Track and verify corrective actions to prevent repeat incidents. Support workers' compensation documentation as needed. Risk Reduction & Continuous Improvement Conduct JHAs (Job Hazard Analyses) and risk assessments for coil coating operations. Support ergonomic improvements, ventilation upgrades, chemical safety enhancements, and process modifications. Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance on equipment upgrades, guarding solutions, and safe work designs. Participate in safety committee activities and cross-functional EHS projects. Emergency Preparedness Support emergency response procedures, drills, and equipment inspections (spill kits, eyewash stations, extinguishers). Assist in maintaining fire suppression systems and emergency response plans. Coordinate with local fire departments and regulatory agencies as needed. Working Conditions: Primarily plant-floor environment with exposure to chemicals, coatings, ovens, heat, fumes, and noise. Requires use of PPE: safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respirators (as required), and steel-toe boots. Frequent walking, standing, climbing ladders/stairs, and entering production areas. Occasional work in outdoor or elevated areas. Standard business hours with occasional off-shift support during incidents, audits, or training. Qualifications: Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field preferred. 2-4 years of EHS experience in manufacturing; coil coating, chemical handling, or metals industry experience preferred. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, hazardous waste management, chemical safety, and industrial ventilation. Experience conducting EHS audits, investigations, and training. Strong documentation, reporting, and compliance skills. Preferred certifications: OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, CPR/First Aid, CHST, or similar. Behavioral Competencies: Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy. Clear and confident communication with employees, supervisors, and leadership. Calm and professional during incidents or investigations. Collaborative and approachable; able to work with all departments. Safety-focused, proactive, and committed to continuous improvement. Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, stand, climb, and perform inspections throughout the facility. Ability to lift up to 25-40 lbs on occasion (samples, equipment, spill response materials). Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators when necessary. Vision and mobility required to perform inspections, audits, and investigations.
