Job Summary:
The UW-Madison Arboretum promotes ecologically sustainable
relationships between people and the land through research,
stewardship, education, and public engagement. Education and
outreach programs emphasize understanding the natural and cultural
history of Wisconsin, basic ecological principles, ecological
restoration, and connections between people and nature.
The Restoration Outreach Coordinator is a member of the Arboretum's
Education unit and reports to the Education Program Manager. The
person in this role will work closely with the Volunteer Program
Manager, Land Care Manager, and Community Education Coordinator, as
well as naturalist educators and volunteers. The unit creates and
facilitates programs that are science-based, accessible, and
meaningful to diverse audiences, while addressing the realities of
a changing world. Our outreach targets varied audiences at the
Arboretum and in our broader community.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Direct activities associated with the Arboretum's volunteer
ecological restoration work party program, including working with
the Volunteer Program Manager to recruit and train volunteers,
scheduling volunteers and staff, working with Land Care Manager to
identify work party locations and activities, and coordinating
purchasing and maintenance of work party tools and supplies.
- Maintain and strengthen partnerships between the Arboretum and
campus and community organizations around the topics of ecological
restoration and ecological literacy.
- Develop, promote, and facilitate outreach programming related to
ecological restoration for Arboretum audiences.
- Contribute to Education Unit strategy and planning.
Responsibilities: Organizes the development and delivery of
outreach programs, including the responsibility for staffing.
Assists with policy development and organizes resources to promote
stable and productive relationships between the university and
local community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs,
facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences.
• 20% Directs the implementation of program policies and
procedures
• 25% Identifies, promotes, and maintains internal and external
partnerships to promote the outreach program
• 25% Schedules and secures logistics and resources in support of
an outreach program
• 20% Schedules day-to-day activities for program staff and
student and community volunteers
• 10% Identifies opportunities for program improvement or new
outreach program development

Qualifications:
Required:
- 3 years of relevant work experience in ecological restoration,
environmental education, or related field.
- Professional experience coordinating the work of volunteers,
students, and/or staff.
- Knowledge of native and invasive plants.
- Knowledge of common ecological restoration methods.
- Experience conducting ecological restoration or vegetation
management work using tools such as loppers, hand saws, hand
removal, and herbicides.
- Ability to behave and communicate in a manner that promotes and
fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation with co-workers,
supervisors, students, volunteers, and visitors.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and problem
solve.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred:
- Experience leading ecological restoration events for volunteers,
students, and/or staff.
- Experience facilitating environmental education or ecology-based
outreach programming using an inquiry-based approach for both
adults and youth.
- Knowledge of southern Wisconsin ecosystems, including native and
invasive plants.
- Leadership development experience with volunteers, students,
and/or staff.
- Familiarity with citizen science projects.
- Familiarity working with (1) Microsoft Office and Google-Suite,
(2) Cloud-based communication, (3) project management tools, (4)
GIS and mapping tools.
- Multi-language proficiency a plus; Spanish proficiency
preferred.
Additional Information
- Must pass a Position of Trust with Access to Vulnerable
Populations background check periodically.
- Must complete Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect
training periodically.
- This position will require occasional evening and weekend work to
facilitate outreach and volunteer programming.
- This position requires the ability to lift 25 pounds and
transport supplies and equipment for outdoor and off-site programs.
Outdoor work sometimes occurs over long distances, over rough
terrain, and in inclement weather.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person,
onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be
performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
