Job Description

GFL Environmental is hiring full-time AZ/DZ Emergency Response Operators in Vaughan, ON, to manage the collection of hazardous waste and respond to emergencies such as spills and accidents. Candidates must be local to Thunder Bay. The role includes training, safety compliance, and teamwork with various stakeholders. Benefits include relocation fees, sign-on bonuses, and RRSP matching. A valid license and emergency response certification are required.
GFL Environmental is looking for full-time AZ/DZ Emergency Response Operators to support our liquid line of business out of our Thunder Bay, Ontario site.


The successful candidates will be primarily responsible for the collection of various liquid and solid hazardous waste from various customer sites. (Please note candidates must be in/around the Thunder Bay area)

Key Responsibilities:

The Emergency Response Operator will respond to various incidents such as:

Environmental and Industrial spills

Clandestine laboratory decommissioning

Highway incidents involving tractor trailers, accidents, and chemical leaks

Train derailments involving hazardous chemicals, fires, and site safety planning.

Marine operations mostly regarding fuel spills into open bodies of water. Involving boom deployment and boat operations.

Weather event responses involving wind/ice storms, forest fires, and flooding.

Chemical assessments and advisory services.

Working alongside police, fire, EMS, Environment Canada, and other stakeholders.

Incidents involving heavy equipment, vacuum trucks, and water blasters.

Collection of hazardous and non-hazardous goods

Participating in job specific and health & safety training as required

Completing work related documentation and reporting

Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others

Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act

Participate in team/staff meetings when required

Work in a manner that preserves confidentiality and minimizes risk



Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

Valid AZ and/or DZ license

Must have flexible availability.

Strong work ethic

Willingness to learn

Highly motivated

Open availability to respond to emergencies

Valid Certification in First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of employment)

Manual dexterity, ability to lift 75+ lbs required.
