Job Description
The Australian Government is seeking a Division Head for the International Climate and Energy Division in Canberra. This senior executive role focuses on leading international climate action and establishing Australia as a renewable energy superpower. Candidates should have deep knowledge of climate policies, proven experience in international engagement, and strong relationship-building skills. The position requires Australian citizenship and a Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance.

• Who we are
The International Climate and Energy Division is responsible for driving international climate action and helping establish Australia as a renewable energy superpower. The Division manages and delivers policies and programs to help Australia and international partners to transition to net zero emissions by 2050 alongside supporting Australia’s presence in multilateral fora. The Division takes a leadership role internationally in responding to climate change, including by participating in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COPs), G20, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC), Clean Energy Ministerial, and the Climate Club. The Division also fosters productive bilateral cooperation on climate change with international partners.
• The job
As a Division Head, you will have a strong focus on results, be adept at solving complex issues and have proven experience in building organisational capability through pragmatic thought leadership. You will be a forward thinker who is self-motivated, resilient and adept at building relationships in a large, complex and fast-paced environment. The Division Head of the International Climate and Energy Division will drive the achievement of Australia’s international objectives in the context of the global net zero transition, working with other Government agencies, international counterparts and stakeholders.
• What we are looking for
To be successful for this role you will need to meet the Senior Executive Service (SES) work level standards as determined by the Australian Public Service Commission and you will have the following knowledge and experience:
- Deep knowledge and understanding of Australia’s domestic climate change policy, low emissions technology and international engagement on climate policies.
- Proven ability to influence international multilateral fora to drive global transition to net zero.
- Capability to work across government and with international partners to realise Australia’s goal of becoming a renewable energy superpower, including through bilateral agreements and strategic positioning in key international organisations.
- Proven ability to build strong working relationships with Ministers, key stakeholders, and international partners to achieve results.
- Project and risk management skills, supporting the delivery of international programs in a timely and effective manner.
- Building and managing a diverse leadership team with complementary skills.
- Dedication to fostering a positive divisional culture and uphold APS values and code of conduct.
• Desirable qualifications
Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field specific to this role are desirable.
• Eligibility and other requirements
• Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
• Security Clearance* - This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
