Job Description

The State of South Carolina is seeking multiple summer interns for the District 1 Transportation Engineering positions in Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Richland, and Sumter. Interns will assist in Maintenance, Construction, and Bridge Engineering activities, including inspections, data analysis, and hands-on work with crews. Applicants must be enrolled in an engineering program. Pay ranges from $17.00 to $23.00 per hour.
Job Responsibilities

This posting will be used to fill multiple summer internship positions in the Department of Transportation District One offices located in Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Richland, and Sumter. Assists in engineering activities in the Maintenance, Construction and/or Bridge Engineering fields. Responsibilities include assisting with:

Maintenance: Conduct inspections on contractors mowing, vegetation grinding, installing traffic markings, etc. Gathers roadway quantities. Works hands on with crews to gather knowledge on drainage, paving, bridge repair, etc. Work with permit technician on driveway permits and utility permits. Inspects placement of pavement markings.

Construction: Assists certified engineering technicians in performing inspection of contractors work to ensure that materials and workmanship are all in accordance with plans and specifications. This work includes asphalt, foundations, paving, curb and gutter placement, and concrete work.

Bridge: Inspects timber components for decay, splits, bearing, etc. Inspects concrete components for spalls, delamination, etc. Inspects stell components for corrosion, section loss, cracks, etc. Operates a pick up truck, john boat, and pulling a boat trailer. Types detailed bridge reports. Reviews previous reports before an inspection. Establishes grade for pile caps and pile cut offs. Places/screeds concrete. Ties reinforcing steel. Cuts lumber/form construction. Sands/grinds steel beams/bearings/rebar. Drills/anchors concrete anchors to attach steel beams. Trains to make full penetration groove welds horizontal, vertical and overhead.

Traffic: Conduct traffic studies, including installing equipment, performs traffic counts, analyzes data. Performs CADD work by creating and revising traffic plans and detour routes. Learns traffic signal design with exposure from the beginning to end of projects.

Pay rate is between $17.00 - $23.00 per hour depending on qualifications.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma; and or an approved acceptable equivalence. Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in a two-year college or university program in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.

Additional Comments

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
