Reporting to the Executive Director of Forest Operations, this position provides director level oversight to the broad spectrum of wildfire prevention, compliance, enforcement, legal and prosecution activities along with leading on wildfire-based legislation, regulations, and policies that apply across the province and connects with multiple stakeholders. The position is accountable for oversight of the Forestry Division's Peace Officer program to ensure staff are trained and complying with the applicable legislation and policies. The Director is responsible for the RCMP Forestry Crimes Unit partnership (2 dedicated members) and liaising with the RCMP on critical high-profile enforcement and investigations.

This position is responsible for the oversight, negotiations, and/or supporting program areas to deliver under a variety of intergovernmental, international, inter agency and industry agreements. These agreements impact a wide spectrum of stakeholders and program areas including multiple agreements with federal government ministries, provincial ministries, municipalities, multiple industries and others.

This position delivers provincial oversight on wildfire prevention programs including the fire ban system which is designed to prevent wildfires and protect Albertans during periods of high fire danger. This role is leading to ensure municipalities, enforcement programs (e.g. RCMP, Fish and Wildlife, Crown Lands Enforcement) and other supporting programs (e.g. Parks, Lands Operations) are able to support delivery of wildfire prevention and compliance across the province.

Qualifications

University graduation in natural sciences e.g. forestry, environmental science; or other fields related to the position e.g. enforcement, emergency management, law, policy, or business; supplemented by six years progressively responsible and related experience preferably in wildfire or forestry.

Equivalency consideration of a diploma in natural resource science or management program such as forestry or similar related discipline plus ten years of experience in natural resource management, forestry and/or wildfire management is required.

Additional Requirement:

• Eligibility to hold a Peace Officer appointment (with the required criminal record checks) is required and Peace Officer training would be considered an asset.

Assets:

• Membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals is preferred.

• Understanding of budgeting and expenditure control.

• Comprehensive knowledge of wildfire, forest management, and forest health programs, legislation, policy, and regulations.

• In-depth understanding of wildfire suppression methods, cause, behavior, prevention principles, and techniques.

• Familiarity with provincial legislation related to forestry, environmental protection, and public lands management.

Notes

This is a full-time permanent position in Edmonton, with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. As the successful candidate, you will be operating out of an office and field setting.

Travel throughout the province on a semi-regular basis will be required as part of your responsibilities and you will have frequent contact with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholders province-wide. This job will require you to fly in a helicopter and work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

The position may also require you to work away from home up to 24 days based on emergent situations within the province.
