Position Summary

The Director of Sustainability provides leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and addressing climate change issues at Bellevue College (BC). The director manages programs and community engagements in sustainable operation, building, and transportation and improving environment.

One of the BC's strategic plan is preparing students to succeed in an interconnected and interdependent world through interdisciplinary learning, focused on economic, social, and environmental sustainability. To achieve this goal, the director will work within the student life, academic, and administrative realms of the college to create opportunities and foster student, employee, and community engagement in sustainability practices and programming. This position will establish Bellevue College as a model organization exhibiting leadership in meeting or exceeding the best practices in college environment sustainability and climate justice in a higher education setting.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Annual salary range begins at : $80,000.

Annual salary will be commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department

The Bellevue College Sustainability department coordinates the efforts of the campus to reduce the use of fossil fuels, promote sustainable energy, and to establish the provision and processing of recycling activities. The sustainability department works within the Campus Operations group and takes the lead in sustainability related capital and improvement projects, including the implementation of solar energy and coordinating efforts to meet requirements of the clean building act.

The department is also a key liaison between administration and the student body in understanding the goals and aspirations of student's in relation to sustainability and the use of the student's sustainability funds, including facilitating key activities such as the annual Earth Week.

Essential Functions

Program Creation, Implementation, & Management
• Provide strategic vision on decision-making, direction, and management of projects focusing on environmental sustainability and climate justice.
• Conceive, design, and implement projects; lead the decision-making in areas such as greenhouse gas emissions reductions, alternative transportation, energy, waste, and water.
• Assess cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and means of achieving acceptance. Work with appropriate college units and departments on execution and implementation.
• Support the Executive Director of Physical Plant Operations to develop, implement, and assess programs, policies, and initiatives that advance and support environmental sustainability and climate justice goals.
• Advise the college community on current grants and scholarships relating to environmental sustainability & climate justice
• Promote “green” building and operation sustainability standards such as LEED, WELL, and others on new construction and renovation projects. Support ongoing requirements for building performance.
• Research best practices and current methods for environmental sustainability and climate justice in college operations, curriculum, and student engagement locally, nationally, and internationally.

Leadership & Consultation
• Ensure broad adoption of the college's policies and commitments to environmental sustainability and climate justice goals, accountabilities, metrics, and activities and accomplishments.
• Provide subject matter expertise and consultation to college constituencies on environmental sustainability and provide leadership in the development of solutions.
• Guide and support college units and departments as needed to establish and accomplish annual objectives that advance the college's commitment to environmental sustainability
• Work with administrators to ensure that environmental sustainability performance goals and annual objectives are met
• Participate in and chair college sustainability committees as delegated.

Community Engagement
• Represent the College in the community and for long term regional planning on environmental and climate justice issues.
• Develop and continue to expand educational and community resources to support sustainability programs, including climate action partnerships.
• Ensure open communication with all college stakeholders.
• Lead partnerships with external stakeholders including government, educational institutions, non-profits, community, businesses, and other groups and organizations on sustainability issues.
• Liaise with peer institutions to maintain current working knowledge of sustainability best practices on college campuses, and represent the College at regional and national sustainability meetings.

Student Leadership & Education
• Advocate for and provide student leadership skill development opportunities that focus on sustainability and experiential learning.
• Provide leadership in organizing events involving students, faculty, and staff to promote campus-wide environmental sustainability practices and foster a climate justice focused culture, to inform the community of progress made, to identify future challenges, and to motivate others to be actively involved in environmental sustainability efforts.
• Collaborate with faculty members to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum.
• Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, or related degree in public administration, business administration or political science, with an environmental sustainability focus; relevant years of experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
• Minimum five (5) years of experience in working with sustainability issues (energy, transportation, waste, ecology, water, equity, food, pollution, materials, community, etc.)
• Minimum three (3) years leading or managing sustainability projects/initiatives.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
• Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and influence college and community stakeholders.
• Effective Communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications
• LEED Green Associate or other sustainability focused professional credential.
• Experience as a leader or advocate for environmental issues.
• Knowledge in a breadth of sustainability issues.
• Experience in supervision of staff and/ or contractors.
• Experience with grant procurement, finance, budgeting, and project management experience.
