Maine Audubon is looking for a Director of Finance and Administration to lead its core business functions. This leadership role combines financial strategy, cross-functional collaboration, and people leadership to support Maine wildlife and habitat. The position is based at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth.

Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and habitat through education, conservation, and action. The organization has eight wildlife sanctuaries, seven chapters, and engages over 250,000 people annually, with a community of more than 30,000 members, volunteers, and supporters. As the organization grows, it seeks a strategic leader to guide its financial health, support its teams, and steward resources for the future.

The Director of Finance and Administration is a core member of the senior leadership team, working closely with the Executive Director. This role oversees finance, HR, and IT functions, providing strategic guidance across the organization. It is both strategic and tactical, involving tasks such as tracking revenues and expenses, creating monthly managerial financial reports, building dashboards, explaining financial impacts to non-financial teams, and coaching business unit leaders on driving results.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Leadership
• Lead all financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and analysis efforts across the organization.
• Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights for staff and board members.
• Convey financial information to partners for grants and other relationships, in conjunction with program, development, and communications departments.
• Partner with business unit leaders to improve financial performance, model revenue and margin growth, and manage expenses.
• Develop and implement financial strategies that support organizational goals and long-term sustainability.
• Drive financial visibility and literacy across teams by coaching and mentoring staff on the fiscal impacts of their work.

Administrative & Operational Oversight
• Oversee IT systems and staff, supporting the strategic use of technology and data systems aligned with organizational priorities.
• Oversee HR operations in collaboration with the HR Manager, Executive Director, and external partners, including employee benefits administration, policy development, and compliance.
• Supervise the finance team, providing development opportunities and fostering a collaborative, accountable work environment.

Governance, Risk & Compliance
• Prepare materials for board meetings and provide financial updates to the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.
• Lead the organization’s annual financial statement and Federal single audit, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and nonprofit reporting requirements.
• Conduct risk assessments across departments and develop processes to strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:
• 10+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or business administration, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
• A BS in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (MBA and/or CPA preferred).
• Experience in the nonprofit sector, including financial oversight of grants, donor-restricted funds, and earned income operations.
• Experience with accounting and record keeping for comprehensive (capital) campaigns.
• Demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring staff, building inclusive teams, and leading across functions.
• Experience supporting HR and IT operations.
• The ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to a wide variety of stakeholders.
• Strategic thinking coupled with a willingness to assist with day-to-day tasks.
• Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office tools.
• A passion for conservation and organizational sustainability.
• Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge or similar accounting software is preferred.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $110,000.
