Job Description
Novel Energy Solutions LLC is seeking a full-time Director of Construction in St Paul, MN, with a salary range of $145,000 - $170,000 per year. The role involves overseeing solar project construction, providing strategic leadership, managing the construction department's performance, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Description
The Director of Construction is responsible for working with the VP of Construction to oversee the construction of solar projects. The Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Construction Department by working with the VP to execute long-range goals, strategies, and plans.
What You'll do:
1. Direct all aspects of construction operations for the project planning and field construction.
2. Challenge the team to continuously improve and find opportunities to add value.
3. Responsible for the performance of the construction department and construction efforts, in accordance with project execution plans, specifications, and contract documents, providing and controlling the labor, material, equipment, and crews to accomplish the work.
4. Ensure all aspects of construction operations are executed as company policy dictates with regard to quality, safety, OSHA and utility specifications.
5. Recommend strategies to improve quality or reduce cost.
o Ensure that all factors used in the production of construction estimates are current and appropriate for the executed plan.
6. Work closely with, and support proposal efforts including analyze constructability of project, recommend construction scope of services, and cost estimate. This will include documenting all key assumptions and data necessary to support the proposal construction estimate.
7. Direct workload, manpower, and material planning to ensure the construction objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner.
8. Control and minimize labor overtime.
9. Oversee the production, maintenance, and updates of project forecasts, budgets, and schedules on a weekly basis.
10. Manage the Construction Department budget and controls expenses effectively.
11. Hire, train, develop, and appraise staff effectively.
o Take corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy.
o Consult with the People Team & supervisor as appropriate.
12. Oversee the production of multiple job sites.
13. Ensure the safety of each employee, vendor, sub-contractor, and temporary labor employees.
14. Coordinate schedules with the construction, engineering, project development and finance departments.
15. Give clear direction to direct reports, follow-up and verify quality and completion to ensure compliance with directive and company process.
What You'll Need:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or equivalent experience
• 5 years of commercial construction management experience in a relevant industry (e.g., renewables, telecom).
• 3-5 years of experience managing a construction team with multiple functions, including project management, engineering, installation, and operations and maintenance.
• Demonstrated success at managing and delivering construction projects on schedule and under budget.
• Experience negotiating with vendors and subcontractors.
• Experience managing self-perform projects.
• Demonstrated Safe Working Practices and Knowledge of OSHA safety standards.
• OSHA 30 certification.
• Demonstrated success at managing and delivering construction projects on schedule and under budget.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
• Proficiency with reading blueprints, plans, specs, contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders.
• Must be detail-oriented and efficient in problem solving.
• Proficiency with Procore or similar construction management software

• Knowledge of the National Electrical Code
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate in appositive manner with team members to foster an environment of superior coordination.
• Good problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a proactive work ethic.
• Experience working with city/county permitting offices and inspectors.
• Previous solar electrical installation experience.
• NABCEP PV Certification.
• Previous solar electrical installation experience.
• PMP certification.
• Proficiency with MS Projects
• Must take and create accountability within the teams, closing each project efficiently whilst maintaining accuracy and strict attention to detail.
