NiSource is seeking a Director of Environmental Policy & Sustainability in Suffolk, VA. The role involves leading a team to develop and implement corporate-wide environmental policies, managing environmental risks, and overseeing compliance with regulations. Responsibilities include analyzing environmental impacts, managing projects, and communicating across the organization. Candidates should have a B.S. in a related field and at least 10 years of experience in environmental or energy sectors.

Job Summary
The Director of Environmental Policy will report to the Sr. Director of Environmental Policy and Sustainability and is responsible for the successful execution of Environmental and Sustainability Strategies for NiSource. This role will lead a team developing and advancing corporate-wide environmental policies on air, water, natural resources, and land issues. Key responsibilities include, tracking and assessing the impact of changes in environmental policy, initiating new environmental programs that support NiSource's business interests, overseeing general environmental risk management, maintaining regulatory tracking systems and providing proactive, environmental services to NiSource Operating Companies that align with NiSource's policy and business objectives.
Essential Functions
• Developing and implementing environmental policies to improve performance, reduce risk, and provide strategic advantages to the corporation, while identifying and analyzing key environmental risks and opportunities.
• Providing expert technical and regulatory direction on environmental matters throughout the organization and overseeing air, water, natural resource, and land policy issues across all NiSource business segments.
Leading climate change and energy transition rule analysis and impact assessment efforts and understanding the application of environmental technologies to improve performance and address environmental issues within business operations.
• Participating in rate case filings and testimony related to environmental and sustainability issues.
• Providing effective project management for environmental aspects of capital projects, integrating new and existing environmental rules and regulations into business operations.
• Following and analyzing industry and regulatory trends that impact the company, and demonstrate command and knowledge of air, water, land, and natural resource-related rules and regulations, including but not limited to the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.
• Strong understanding of environmental agency compliance requirements and applicable state and federal environmental laws/regulations as they pertain to the energy industry
• Effectively communicating technical subject matter at all organizational levels and functions and developing proactive stakeholder relationships within and outside NiSource
• Assisting in financial and other reporting related to the environmental and sustainability matters, including development and maintenance of processes that are complaint compliant with Sarbanes-Oxley and other disclosure related rules
• Establishing and coordinating cross-functional teams (staff, internal subject matter experts, project managers, and consultants) and supervising staff effectively to support these objectives.
• Demonstrating success in leading and collaborating with diverse teams on complex environmental issues and being recognized for leadership in the environmental field.
Required Qualifications For Position
• Minimum of B.S. in environmental, engineering, ot related field
• 10+ years' experience in environmental, energy or related field
• Able to identify opportunities and develop strategic programs from a multifunctional, cross-process perspective to enhance business plans
• Self-directed aptitude and willing to contribute in a wide array of environmental disciplines
• Demonstrated ability to lead in a team environment and have a strong ability to work with and be a leader in diverse team settings
• Advanced knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, federal, state and local applicable to NiSource companies
• Demonstrated ability to supervise staff in an effective manner
• Demonstrated ability to work interactively and cooperatively with business segment and NiSource corporate leadership and staff
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Strong project management and strategy building skills
• Approximately 20% travel
• Knowledge of energy related fields including electric generation, natural gas transmission and storage, and natural gas distribution.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
• Advanced degree in related field

Salary Range*:
$155,400.00 - $233,100.00
• The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
