The Director of the Bureau of Environmental Health at Metro Nashville oversees environmental health programs, ensuring compliance with regulations and leading staff. Job DescriptionReq#: 4038169 The Environmental Health Bureau Director manages the ongoing development and implementation of environmental health programs and provides leadership and supervision for staff. This position serves on the executive leadership team. General responsibilities include but are not limited to ensuring compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, as well as policy and manual updating and availability. Programmatic areas under the purview of this position include air quality and pollution control, animal care and control, food protection, pest management, public facilities inspection, radon testing, septic and sewage disposal systems. The bureau director is responsible for keeping abreast of any changes in laws and regulations that impact the work and organization.
This position is with the Nashville Davidson County Public Health Department.

ResponsibilitiesSupports environmental health programs with vision and strategy development in their areas of responsibility. Helps them succeed through idea development, facilitation, consultation, coaching, and mentoring.
Directs and coordinates the division to implement and enforce environmental policies and procedures in compliance with the City Charter and ordinance requirements.
Assumes responsibility for overall direction and strategic planning of bureau. Advises the Public Health Director in matters concerning program objectives, program concerns, emerging issues, environmental and public health trends, and environmental services needs and gaps.
Ensures proper implementation of the methods, techniques, and procedures utilized in investigations, analysis, evaluations, and enforcement of environmental standards.
Ensures that programs internal/external of the bureau work collaboratively to protect the public’s health, including the health and well-being of disenfranchised, underserved populations and the entire community.
Responsible for proactive and timely responses to emerging issues and public health topics by establishing clear priorities and mobilizing necessary staff and resources.
Supervises and participates in the preparation of reports and statistical information; presents to department staff, Board of Health, county and state officials and other external agencies when necessary.
Develops strong community partnerships to address environmental health issues. Coordinates activities and collaborates with other County departments and divisions, state agencies, and community service groups; represents the Department on community and state advisory boards and participates in various Department and community committees or special projects, particularly as they relate to environmental health.
Takes personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service to promote and maintain a positive public health image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum RequirementsGraduation from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of progressively responsible full-time paid employment required. Four (4) years must have been in a public administration/supervisory capacity.
Completed graduate degree in a directly related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
Demonstrated success as a manager, administrator, leader, and team builder required. Possess required competencies upon hiring.
Master’s degree in a closely related field or a graduate degree in environmental science, policy or law, or equivalent experience.
Environmental health related licenses, certifications, and memberships in environmental health professional associations desired.
Experience in the administration and implementation of programs, including developing strategic plans, work plans, budgets, and project management.
Proven track record of advancing environmental health performance and cultural transformation. This includes the creation and/or execution of safety, sustainability, environmental and health standards, processes, and measures.
Possess working knowledge of safety and environmental health practices as well as regulations and standards promulgated by OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, ANSI, NFPA, etc.
Possess project management capabilities; can develop and deliver senior level presentations with executive presence and to all associate levels; strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
Possess analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills to evaluate work-related problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions.
Ability to function independently and deal with multiple, simultaneous projects.
Ability to implement change in a positive, sensitive, and forward-thinking manner.
