Description
Watco is hiring a Night Shift Deckhand in Columbus, Mississippi to join its dynamic maritime operations team. The Deckhand plays a key role in keeping the supply chain moving by assisting with barge and fleet management, ensuring operational safety, and maintaining vessel equipment. This is a hands-on role ideal for individuals who thrive in outdoor and physically demanding environments and are committed to safety and teamwork.

Responsibilities
• Build and break tows; ensure barges are secured safely
• Assist in vessel fueling and maintenance, including cleaning, scraping, painting, and filter changes
• Handle lines and rigging; use proper knots and barge-tying procedures
• Conduct safety inspections and report deficiencies
• Participate in training programs and comply with USCG/environmental regulations
• Respond to emergency scenarios (e.g., man overboard)
• Maintain proper gear stowage and assist with barge spotting
• Operate equipment such as skid steers and wheel loaders for dockside support
• Communicate effectively with the Boat Pilot and other crew members
• Work safely on uneven and slippery surfaces, including catwalks and barge decks
Minimum Requirements
• Must be able to work 12-hour night shifts on a 7-on, 7-off schedule
• Ability to wear full PPE including PFDs, safety glasses, and met-guard boots
• Physically fit: able to lift, balance, and work in variable outdoor conditions
• Must be able to obtain a TWIC card
• Strong communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Reliable transportation and ability to work onsite in Columbus, MS
• Must read, write, and speak English and understand basic math
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous maritime, barge, or fleet experience
• Familiarity with USCG compliance procedures
• Mechanical aptitude for minor maintenance and repair
