Job description
We are currently seeking a Data Engineer for our international and diverse Climate Policy Team (CPT). The team is engaged in various projects on climate change mitigation, in particular on energy system transformation, the 1.5°C global warming limit and the evaluation of national climate action. This includes flagship projects, such as the Climate Action Tracker and the National Pathways Explorer, for which data is being processed and analysed in-house and then published on the respective project websites.

Climate Analytics is a global climate science and policy institute established in 2008 that delivers cutting-edge science, analysis and support to accelerate climate action and keep global warming below 1.5°C. Our international team is composed of roughly 140 staff. Half are based at our headquarters in Berlin, Germany, and the remainder work out of our five regional offices in Africa, Australia & Pacific, the Caribbean, South Asia and North America. You will work on setting up and maintaining a new data architecture for these flagship projects and will contribute to data processing systems of other projects.
• Your main responsibility is to develop, construct, test and maintain the inhouse data infrastructure for our flagship projects (including the Climate Action Tracker and the National Pathways Explorer projects); for this you assess the data structures currently in place and identify if/how they could be modified.
• You contribute to setting up data processing systems for other CPT projects for which you work together with our data scientists
• You liaise with internal users of the data to ensure that the data infrastructure meets their needs
• You collaborate with web developers and partner with our Communications Team to facilitate the publication of data on the project website
• You work with colleagues to identify relevant new energy and climate datasets, and you integrate these datasets into the data structure
• Together with our external IT provider, you support analysts and modellers with working on our remote working station
Your profile
You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills:
• A Masters degree in computer engineering/science or a related field
• At least six years of working experience in thise field
• You are experienced in:
• Building reliable data pipelines to ensure smooth data flows
• Automating workflows and processing large-scale data
• Diagnosing and improving performance of data flows
• You are have excellent skills in:
• Python
• Excel
• a database management system
• Git and CI/CD
• Linux
• Experience in using and administrating servers for webhosting (e.g. Ubuntu based using nginx) as well as working experience with digital content creation tools (e.g. JavaScript) will be considered an asset
• Excellent English writing and verbal skills are a requirement
• Knowledge of energy and climate data sets is a plus
• Highly organised, detail-oriented, and motivated self-starter
• Interest in and proven ability to work in a diverse, interdisciplinary and international team

Conditions
